rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> giant of allowing third parties, including\u00a0Cambridge\u00a0Analytica, to access users\u2019 personal information.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed settlement, which was disclosed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fingfx.thomsonreuters.com\/gfx\/legaldocs\/gkplwwkebvb\/12232022facebook_settle.pdf\">in a\u00a0court filing<\/a>\u00a0late Thursday, would resolve a\u00a0long-running lawsuit\u00a0prompted by revelations in 2018 that Facebook had allowed the British political consulting firm\u00a0Cambridge\u00a0Analytica to access data of as many as 87 million users.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for the plaintiffs called the proposed settlement the largest to ever be achieved in a US data privacy class action and the most that Meta has ever paid But US District Judge Vince Chhabria called that view \u201cso wrong\u201d and in 2019\u00a0largely allowed\u00a0the case to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement covers an estimated 250 million to 280 million Facebook users, according to Thursday\u2019s court filing. How much an individual user receives will depend on how many people submit valid claims for a share of the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for the plaintiffs say they plan to ask the judge to award them up to 25% of the settlement as attorneys\u2019 fees, equaling about $181 million.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
