A former commissioner with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Berkovitz joined the agency in November 2021. At the time, he said he planned to work with SEC Chair Gary Gensler on a \u201cregulatory agenda that will enhance investor protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After thirty-four years of public service, it is time for me to pursue new and different challenges and opportunities,&#8221; said Berkovitz.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether\u00a0Berkovitz intends to join the private sector after leaving the SEC.\u00a0Brian Quintenz, who served as a CFTC commissioner from 2017 to 2021, joined\u00a0venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz in September 2021 as an adviser to the company\u2019s crypto team.<\/p>\n<p>Megan Barbero, the SEC\u2018s principal deputy general counsel, will assume Berkovitz\u2019s position upon his departure. Gensler said her advancement comes at a \u201ccritical time\u201d for the SEC. <\/p>\n<p>During his time at the CFTC, Berkovitz said the agency\u2019s enforcement actions in the crypto space were \u201caggressive,\u201d citing a $100 million civil monetary penalty against derivatives exchange BitMEX. Many have also criticized Gensler and the SEC for the agency\u2019s \u201cregulation by enforcement\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to crypto.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>SEC files unregistered securities charges against Thor Token creators for 2018 ICO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the SEC specifically labeled nine tokens as \u201ccrypto asset securities\u201d in an insider trading case involving a former manager at crypto exchange Coinbase.
