\n Prolific Australian actor Stephen Peacocke makes his US TV debut in \u201cFive Bedrooms,\u201d now streaming on Peacock.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really nice to know that our show has found an audience in America. I\u2019m really chuffed,\u201d Peacocke, 38, tells The Post. \u201cAnd a story like this that\u2019s not the typical tourism postcard that you sometimes get in Australia films.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFive Bedrooms,\u201d which originally aired on Network 10 in Australia, follows five people in their 30s and 40s \u2014 some of whom barely know each other \u2014 who agree to buy a house as an investment after sharing their woes about dating and apartment hunting while seated at the \u201csingles table\u201d of a mutual friend\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s Ainsley (Katie Robertson), a real estate agent in love with her \u201coffice husband\u201d Lachlan (Hugh Sheridan); Harry (Roy Joseph), a closeted gay surgeon who still lives with his traditional-minded Indian mother; Liz (Kat Stewart), a high-powered attorney coming off a divorce; Heather (Doris Younane) a mom whose marriage is on the rocks; and construction worker Ben (Peacocke) the affable jokester of the group who\u2019s hiding some secrets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s something nice about Ben\u2019s naivety and innocence,\u201d says Peacocke. \u201cHe\u2019s someone that genuinely sees the best in people, which is a nice trait to have these days. He\u2019s a funny character, but at the same time he can capture a person\u2019s bulls\u2013t and see what\u2019s really going on. He\u2019s brave enough to tell people what he really thinks \u2014 but he can do it in a disarming enough way that people listen to him and like him.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years in Australia, I was playing a character who was likable, but he was getting what he wanted with his fists,\u201d he says, referring to his award-winning stint as Darryl Braxton on the long-running Australian soap \u201cHome and Away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s nice to play someone like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

That series<\/a> launched the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Naomi Watts and Heath Ledger. Aside from \u201cHome and Away,\u201d Peacocke has also been in the Australian shows \u201cAll Saints\u201d and \u201cWanted.\u201d On the big screen, he\u2019s had roles in \u201cHercules\u201d with Dwayne Johnson, \u201cWhiskey Tango Foxtrot\u201d with Tina Fey and Margot Robbie and \u201cMe Before You\u201d with Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin.<\/p>\n

His showbiz career, however, had an unconventional start. Before going into acting, he spent a year in his youth as a \u201cjackaroo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got different names for things in Australia [and] I was essentially a [cattle] wrangler,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I graduated from school, I moved out in the desert. In America, it would be the equivalent of living out in Texas or Arizona. It was about an eight-hour drive to any major city, and it was a huge place that was so flat and open you could see the curvature of the earth.<\/p>\n

\u201c[There] you meet people that take their jobs very seriously but don\u2019t take themselves seriously, and I think that was the biggest lesson I learned that I\u2019ve been able to take into acting \u2026 an industry where there are always stories about people who maybe take themselves a bit too seriously,\u201d he says. \u201cIt gave me a good grounding and keeps you humble \u2014 which is a good thing for anyone, regardless of what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, Peacocke says, the fact that his surname matches his new network in America has turned into a running joke with his cast members.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was instantly calling my agent to see if there was any way I could get some sort of royalty out of it, despite the fact that it\u2019s a different spelling of the name,\u201d he says. \u201cI thought it was very funny. I\u2019ve been telling everyone that it\u2019s my family connection that\u2019s got us on the TV in America \u2014 so they all owe me!\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
