(AP) \u2014 The water system in Jackson, Mississippi, which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/floods-mississippi-tate-reeves-jackson-climate-and-environment-3cc65dd4bdc83e8c48a7aeee8b76bd8d\" data-ylk=\"slk:partially collapsed in late August,\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">partially collapsed in late August,<\/a> was experiencing \u201cfluctuating\u201d pressure impacting residents on Saturday amid frigid temperatures, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Some neighborhoods in Jackson had low water pressure and residents said they had no water pressure on Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n<p>As the temperature remained below freezing, production slowed at one of the city&#8217;s water treatment plants while officials worked to correct the pressure drop they believed was caused by leaks and water line breaks.<\/p>\n<p>City spokesperson Melissa Payne said the decreasing temperature was contributing to an increasing number of breaks. \u201cOur crews are out, right now, working to repair those leaks and line breaks. Despite the challenges, both plants are still producing,&#8221; Payne said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The potential for further disruptions to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-mississippi-tate-reeves-jackson-climate-and-environment-2018b4568bd707d0feea48a10c474df8\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jackson\u2019s water system\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Jackson\u2019s water system<\/a> comes just months after the city of about 150,000 residents lost water in late August.<\/p>\n<p>The water system <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/floods-mississippi-jackson-e926f9faca6230777a4227b50f89e93a\" data-ylk=\"slk:fell into crisis\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">fell into crisis<\/a> after flooding exacerbated longstanding problems in one of two water treatment plants. Most of Jackson lost running water for several days and people waited in lines for water to drink, cook, bathe and flush toilets.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021, tens of thousands of Jackson residents were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alabama-mississippi-jackson-storms-oxford-89a4b2fd36dea0051ae7805a899e47d3\" data-ylk=\"slk:left without running water\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">left without running water<\/a> for days after pipes froze, which had temperatures mirrored during this week&#8217;s cold snap.<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to this weekend&#8217;s \u201carctic blast\u201d that brought dangerously cold air to Jackson, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba warned the city\u2019s the water distribution system remained a \u201chuge vulnerability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in no position to promise that sustained arctic temperatures won\u2019t impact the water system and other infrastructure,\u201d Lumumba said Monday. \u201cWe are going to prepare for the worst, but pray for the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> post, the National Weather Service&#8217;s Jackson branch said Friday&#8217;s high temperature of 24 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 4 degrees Celsius) in the city ties the second-coldest high temperature for the date set back in 1963. \u201cThat\u2019s how anomalous this air mass is,\u201d the announcement stated.<\/p>\n<p>The freezing conditions arrived as a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/weather-business-storms-canada-accidents-7dcf12998cf2112af9ddc499997d2759\" data-ylk=\"slk:winter storm\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">winter storm<\/a> knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses and disrupted <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> plans across the United States on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Michael Goldberg is a corps member for the Associated Press\/Report for America Statehouse <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Initiative.
