Source: TradingView<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bitcoin_volatility_index_plumbs_lowest_ever_levels\"><\/span>Bitcoin volatility index plumbs lowest ever levels<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/BTCUSD\/?exchange=BINANCE\">TradingView<\/a> showed BTC\/USD clinging to a tight trading range around $16,800.<\/p>\n<p>The pair had stubbornly refused to offer any form of volatility through much of the week, with an absence of a macro trigger reinforcing lackluster performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBitcoin&#8217;s volatility is at an all-time low,\u201d William Clemente, founder of crypto research firm Reflexivity, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WClementeIII\/status\/1607007954552737794\">noted<\/a> alongside a chart of the Bitcoin historical volatility index.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-12\/97d803eb-ae15-422f-b234-c4723258b753.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bitcoin historical volatility index 1-week candle chart. Source: TradingView<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trader and analyst Phoenix meanwhile <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Phoenix_Ash3s\/status\/1607016335979978755\/photo\/1\">eyed<\/a> similarities to Christmas 2018, right after the pit of Bitcoin\u2019s last bear market during its previous halving cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The length of time between its prior all-time high and Christmas lows a year later, he showed, were broadly similar \u2014 117 bars and 137 candles for 2018 and 2022, respectively, on the 3-day chart.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-12\/b43399f8-e64f-4523-b76f-3a437e877275.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>BTC\/USD annotated chart. Source: Bagsy\/ Twitter<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even less optimistic was analyst Toni Ghinea, who on Christmas Eve doubled down on his theory that next quarter would produce the next bear market trough.<\/p>\n<p>This did, however, leave room for a final sprint toward $19,000 in the last week of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Last bull trap at 17.5-19k in December-January.
