Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear unlikely to lead to further bans on TikTok, which is owned by Chinese-based company ByteDance, on private devices, despite\u00a0the introduction of such a ban\u00a0in Congress last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as individual users are concerned, at least for right now and for the time being, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to have much of an impact on the accessibility to individual consumers because the direct threat to users has not yet been recognized,\u201d said Cyrus Walker, the founder and managing principal at cybersecurity firm Data Defenders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The wildly popular <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> platform has made serious inroads in the United States, with more than 85 million users in the U.S. alone, and is widely used\u00a0across the country \u2014 particularly by people under the age of 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Walker, however, said the attention given to the bans on TikTok for devices used by federal and state workers could spark a wider conversation about privacy and security concerns with the app.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also said it could lead private companies to tell their employees to keep the app off work phones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAs we see this momentum build in the municipal space restricting or banning TikTok altogether, I think you\u2019re going to see corporations, particularly larger ones, follow suit because of the threat of corporate espionage that could take place at a larger level,\u201d he\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers have become increasingly concerned that by downloading the app, government workers are giving\u00a0the Chinese government\u00a0potential access to their\u00a0devices\u00a0that it could use to collect data on U.S. citizens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Kelley, a research assistant in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> and national security program at the Center for a New American Security, said that if the TikTok ban on federal government\u00a0devices\u00a0does become law, it would at least make some Americans question the validity of those concerns and ask themselves: \u201cIf the government isn\u2019t comfortable with this app existing on federal infrastructure, should I be comfortable with it operating within my own home?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), part of the group of bipartisan lawmakers who introduced legislation that would prohibit the use of TikTok nationwide, argued the possibly security threats of the app do extend to regular citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal government has yet to take a single meaningful action to protect American users from the threat of TikTok,\u201d\u00a0Rubio <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?ID=D1C2E147-3A23-4F49-AC27-268572AABDCD\">said in a statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about creative videos \u2014 this is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Introducing the bill, Rubio and\u00a0Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) cited concerns recently raised by the FBI and\u00a0Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that the app is being used to spy on Americans in that way.<\/p>\n<p>FCC Commissioner\u00a0Brendan Carr\u00a0said in an interview with Axios last month that Congress banning the app was\u00a0the only path forward\u00a0in light of such concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere simply isn\u2019t a world in which you could come up with sufficient protection on the data that you could have sufficient confidence that it\u2019s not finding its way back into the hands of the [Chinese Communist Party],\u201d Carr said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The concerns date back to the Trump administration, which attempted to ban the social media platform in 2020 with an executive order that was\u00a0later blocked by a federal court.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok,\u00a0which has\u00a0pushed back on\u00a0the\u00a0concerns,\u00a0said it was\u00a0disappointed with states\u00a0banning the app on government devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re disappointed that so many states are jumping on the bandwagon to enact policies based on unfounded, politically charged falsehoods about TikTok,\u201d a spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson also denied that TikTok shares information with the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>Experts\u00a0are skeptical about\u00a0that denial, however.\u00a0They\u00a0say\u00a0that since TikTok is owned by a Chinese-based company, it is likely subject to Chinese laws, which require companies to comply with requests from the government for access to data originating from such apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, basically, you\u2019re giving China an open door into your device and into your network,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cJust that relationship alone is a significant threat and risk to U.S. government assets,\u201d he said, referring to ByteDance\u2019s ownership of TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond a ban on TikTok, Walker said the potential security threats posed by the platform could also plausibly be reduced if ByteDance were to sell it to an American company and completely divest itself from the app\u2019s ownership. But he thinks such a move is unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>He recommended that regular citizens worried about their privacy should simply delete TikTok from their phones.<\/p>\n<p>Jamil Jaffer,\u00a0founder and executive director of the National Security Institute at George Mason University\u2019s Antonin Scalia Law School, similarly advised that users practice more caution.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAmerican consumers should be much more careful with their kids and their families using TikTok because while it may be a very appealing app to use from a social perspective, it is hugely problematic from a data collection and surveillance perspective,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But he also\u00a0went a step further than Walker, who thinks regular citizens shouldn\u2019t be forced not to use the app, arguing that it should be\u00a0banned\u00a0for all users\u00a0across the U.S., regardless of whether they work for government or not, to protect the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is they\u2019re collecting data on Americans \u2026 and use that data to leverage it against us as a nation,\u201d Jaffer said. \u201cI don\u2019t think the ban should be about the government alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly government employees shouldn\u2019t have TikTok on their phone, but the app should be banned across the United States,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
