\n New York\u2019s habit of offering blanket protections for renters has a serious dark side, as Heidi Russell is learning.<\/p>\n

Russell rented out the second bedroom of her Barrow Street co-op to Kate Gladstone \u2014 who allegedly turned out to be a roommate from hell.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, a judge ruled that Russell can\u2019t evict the woman she calls a \u201cserial grifter,\u201d thanks to Gov. Cuomo\u2019s ban on evictions. <\/p>\n

This, despite what Russell has suffered for the last year. In June 2019, Russell rented the room to Gladstone for a short-term stay. But when asked to leave, Russell says, Gladstone \u201cflew off the handle, yelling, \u2018No, no, impossible, you\u2019re going to ruin my life .\u2009.\u2009. I\u2019m not leaving.\u2019\u2009\u201d <\/p>\n

Then came the torture, Russell told The Post: not paying rent, repeatedly spritzing Russell with cleaning chemicals, letting her dog relieve itself in the unit and more. Russell\u2019s afraid to stay in her own apartment.<\/p>\n

Gladstone denies all the allegations. But it seems to be a habit: Court records show she\u2019s faced repeated accusations of this behavior. And she\u2019s been arrested twice, facing trial next month for forgery and grand larceny.<\/p>\n

Consider it more proof of how progressives\u2019 attempts to protect renters at all costs end up harming innocents.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
