after being sued for releasing a serial criminal who less than a week later tried to murder a waiter in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>The Bail Project \u2014 whose supporters include Danny Glover, John Legend and Richard Branson \u2014 announced it discontinued its operations due to restructuring in early December, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.8newsnow.com\/investigators\/non-profit-that-bailed-out-man-who-shot-chinatown-waiter-ceases-operations-following-backlash-from-critics\/\">8 NewsNow reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its closure comes after it posted a $3,000 bond for burglary suspect Rashawn Gaston-Anderson in December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Six days later, Gaston-Anderson shot Chengyan Wang 11 times in Chinatown, 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>Now reported.<\/p>\n<p>In a plea deal, the 24-year-old was convicted of attempted robbery and mayhem, both with deadly weapon enhancements, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news3lv.com\/news\/local\/man-convicted-in-chinatown-waiter-shooting-gets-prison-sentence-las-vegas-shanghai-taste-rashon-gaston-anderson-lvmpd-metro-police-southern-nevada-clark-county-courts\">according to News 3 Las Vegas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaston-Anderson was sentenced in December to seven to 18 years behind bars for the shooting.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" in releasing Gaston-Anderson despite his criminal past.<\/p>\n<p>Wang \u2014 who also is suing Gaston-Anderson and Shanghai Plaza owner US Hui De Real Estate Investment Corp. \u2014 is seeking over $15,000 in damages from each defendant, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/local\/local-las-vegas\/waiter-shot-11-times-suing-bail-reform-group-that-helped-client-get-out-of-jail-2699506\/\">Las Vegas Review-Journal reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s got scars all over his body. He can\u2019t move his shoulder over a certain height. The repeat offender was then sprung from jail after the nonprofit posted his $3,000 bond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally when bail is posted, a cash bail, it is a family member or friend who is familiar with the accused,\u201d Wolfson told the Review-Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne can say, in a sense, they are vouching for the person. They are risking their own money. A family member comes forward, a brother, a friend, and if they put up $3,000 and this person doesn\u2019t show up or re-offends, they lose their own money,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this case, we have an out-of-state national organization with little or no ties to our community who puts up the cash bail,\u201d the prosecutor added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img De<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bail Project, which advocates against the cash bail system nationwide and provides free bail funds for the poor, never registered as a bail agent with Nevada\u2019s Division of Insurance, as required by state law, Kaplan told the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re going around as a bailing agency bailing people out with no or little due diligence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron Pipe, a regional director for The Bail Project, called the shooting \u201can absolute tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bail Project, myself speaking for The Bail Project, found it absolutely shocking,\u201d Pipe told 8 News Now last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single decision that we make at The Bail Project goes through the exact same thorough review,\u201d he said when asked whether the group noticed any red flags before posting Gaston-Anderson\u2019s bond.<\/p>\n<p>The Bail Project\u2019s deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> counsel Katie Poor told the outlet that the group provides \u201cfree bail assistance and what we call community release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out how people are innocent until proven guilty and that bail conditions are Gaston-Anderson\u2019s bail at $3,000 at the request of the Clark County DA\u2019s Office, according to court records cited by 8 News Now.<\/p>\n<p>He was reportedly one of 51 people whom The Bail Project has bailed out in the Las Vegas area since February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Of those, 91% returned to their court dates, a spokesperson told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Kaplan, Wang\u2019s attorney, alleges that US Hui De Real Estate Investment Corp. is liable for not providing adequate security at the time of the shooting, the Review-Journal reported.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Chen, its Las Vegas legal adviser, could not be reached for comment by the paper. A rep for The Bail Project in Pasadena also could not be reached.<\/p>\n<p>On its website, the group says it \u201ccombats mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system \u2014 one person at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe restore the presumption of innocence, reunite families, and challenge a system that criminalizes race and poverty,\u201d it says. \u201cWe\u2019re on a mission to end cash bail and create a more just, equitable, and humane pretrial system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark County public defender Darin Imlay acknowledged that his office played a role in bringing The Bail Project to the Las Vegas Valley but has no formal relationship with the group.<\/p>\n<p>Imlay told the Review-Journal that the group accepts referrals from any attorney, including private attorneys, but that it decides by itself whether to bail someone out.<\/p>\n<p>Gaston-Anderson said he needed a co-signer and his public defender referred him to The Bail Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI probably wouldn\u2019t have been able to co-sign for myself because I\u2019m not from out here,\u201d he told 8 News Now from the Clark County Detention Center.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
