Its pilot was forced to \u201ctake evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>China frequently challenges military aircraft from the U.S. and its allies, especially over the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-beijing-international-law-south-china-sea-4370828e295d2eec9a4804bba9940273\" data-ylk=\"slk:strategically vital South China Sea\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">strategically vital South China Sea<\/a>, which China claims in its entirety. Such behavior led to a 2001 in-air collision in which a Chinese plane was lost and pilot killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Indo-Pacific Joint Force is dedicated to a free and open Indo-Pacific region and will continue to fly, sail and operate at sea and in international airspace with due regard for the safety of all vessels and aircraft under international law,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>China deeply <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-china-asia-beijing-philippines-2ad93bc67233e987f8ef6d0f32fb2f60\" data-ylk=\"slk:resents the presence of U.S. military assets in the South China Sea\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">resents the presence of U.S. military assets in the South China Sea<\/a> and regularly demands its ships and planes leave the area.
