rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y New Year!<\/p>\n<p>A new Omicron variant is rapidly spreading in the US just in time to ring in 2023, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>The strain, known XBB.1.5, accounts for about 41% of confirmed COVID cases across the nation, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\">the data shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mutation has gained considerable traction over the past week, the CDC noted \u2014 jumping from just 21% seven days ago. <\/p>\n<p>It was first reported in mid-November and has now overtaken the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 variants, which dominated cases in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>XBB.1.5, a relative of the XBB strain, has mainly been reported in the northeastern section of the US, the health agency said. <\/p>\n<p>Over 70% of COVID cases in New York through Maine are now XBB.1.5.<\/p>\n<p>The strengthening variant could pose a problem amid the busy holiday <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip region of the country and that it\u2019s going to increase in all regions of the country,\u201d Dr. Barbara Mahon, director of the CDC\u2019s proposed Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-variant-xbb-1-5-cdc-tracking-us-cases\/\">told CBS News.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andrew Pekosz, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University, said XBB.1.5 appears to be highly immune evasive because it has an additional mutation that makes it bind better to cells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe virus needs to bind tightly to cells to be more efficient at getting in and that could help the virus be a little bit more efficient at infecting people,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/30\/covid-news-omicron-xbbpoint1point5-is-highly-immune-evasive-and-binds-better-to-cells.html\">Pekosz told CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image indication XBB.1.5 causes more severe illness or poses any greater danger to those infected compared previous strains, Mahon said. <\/p>\n<p>Still, experts are urging caution as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#new-hospital-admissions\">COVID hospitalizations have risen<\/a> in the US in recent weeks as the nation just celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>In the last week weeks of December, hospitalizations rose 3.6% across the US. <\/p>\n<p>Still, the number of COVID hospitalizations aren\u2019t expected to reach the level they did last winter.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklydeaths_select_00\">deaths from the virus in the US<\/a> have remained steady.
