Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 225,000\u00a0claims\u00a0for the latest week. <\/p>\n<p>It was the second straight week claims increased. The\u00a0figures have been choppy in recent weeks but have held well below the 270,000 threshold that economists see as a red flag for the labor market. A raft of layoffs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> sector and interest-rate sensitive industries like housing have yet to leave a notable imprint on\u00a0claims\u00a0as laid-off workers <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to cycle into new jobs with relative ease.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell \u2014 the chief architect of the central bank\u2019s aggressive interest rate hikes aimed at bringing too-high inflation to heel \u2014 earlier this month said \u201cit feels like we have a structural labor shortage out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Indeed, the\u00a0labor market\u2019s resilience\u00a0is a central focus for Fed policymakers, as the US economy has minted an average of 392,000 new jobs a month this year despite rapid rate hikes and\u00a0growing fears of a recession next year. Officials see that strength as providing ample room for them to continue to raise interest rates to bring down inflation, which by their preferred measure remains nearly three times their targeted level of 2% annually even if it has recently shown signs of heading lower.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank has lifted rates from near zero in March to the\u00a0current range of 4.25% to 4.50%\u00a0and Fed officials project it will breach the\u00a05% mark in 2023, a level not seen since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Economists believe that companies are likely to cut back on hiring before embarking on layoffs. Employers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly reluctant to lay off workers after struggling to find labor during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0claims\u00a0report showed the number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid\u00a0rose 41,000 to 1.710 million\u00a0in the week ending\u00a0Dec. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Those so-called continuing\u00a0claims, a proxy for hiring,\u00a0have drifted higher since early October, and\u00a0the latest report is the first since February to show them reaching\u00a0the trend level of 1.7-1.8 million that prevailed in the years leading up to the pandemic, a level seen then as emblematic of a tight labor market.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
