This was no casual prank or random act of vandalism. It was clearly planned, and the damage required nearly a month to repair.<\/p>\n<p>At the time the FBI downplayed the incident, saying publicly that it didn\u2019t think it was terrorist-related.<\/p>\n<p>The mystery deepened with a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of Christmas Day attacks this year on two electricity substations in Washington state that led to blackouts for thousands of customers. Local authorities thought the attack was perhaps part of a burglary \u2014 thieves sometimes target electric-utility facilities for their valuable copper and other materials with a high black-market value \u2014 but there was a telling detail in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> stories on the incident: The local utility had received prior warning of a possible attack from \u201cfederal law enforcement officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which federal law-enforcement officials might those be?<\/p>\n<p>In January a Department of Homeland Security report concluded that \u201cextremist groups\u201d had developed \u201ccredible, specific plans\u201d to attack the grid. The report didn\u2019t single out any particular group or motivation, saying a spectrum of extreme ideologies could have embraced the cause. According to one estimate, there have been more than 100 attacks on the grid this year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/christmas-washington-state-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"power crew\" class=\"wp-image-25177602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/christmas-washington-state-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/christmas-washington-state-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/christmas-washington-state-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Department of Homeland Security report suggests that America\u2019s power grid has been the target for attacks. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Ken Lambert\/The Seattle Times\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The FBI has a long history of monitoring and infiltrating extremist groups and understandably remains tight-lipped about which groups it has under active surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>While the Biden administration is obsessed with \u201cright-wing extremism,\u201d one can\u2019t help but speculate whether targeting the grid is the newest front in ecoterrorism. The FBI and other government agencies have long downplayed this possibility.<\/p>\n<p>There is certainly a long precedent for this kind of \u201cdirect action\u201d from eco-fanatics. Thirty years ago, Earth First made its bones driving spikes into trees with the deliberate attempt to thwart logging, even though tree-spikes often resulted in serious injuries to loggers when they used their chainsaws. Other ecoterrorist groups such as the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front committed arson against ski resorts and slaughterhouses, with one conviction for a late-1990s attack occurring only last spring.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The steady rise of the climate-change obsession is already seeing irrational and destructive public stunts such as blocking road traffic and trains and throwing paint or food at artwork in museums while gluing hands and feet to walls or floors. These antics don\u2019t do anything to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. But crippling the grid would. If so, it would represent the coming to life of one of the classic texts of radical environmentalism, Edward Abbey\u2019s 1975 novel \u201cThe Monkey Wrench Gang,\u201d which advocated, among other direct actions, attacks on major energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The founders of Earth First said Abbey\u2019s novel was one of their inspirations. Is a new generation of \u201cmonkey-wrenchers\u201d now on the scene? The FBI and other government bodies owe us more candor about what is going on.<\/p>\n<p><em>Steven F.
