I\u2019m on the train. I\u2019m coming home,\u201d Pippa recalled her son, Dorian, responding to her frantic 4:30 a.m. text.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then, he didn\u2019t\u2026 He never did make it,\u201d she told The Post recently. \u201cIt\u2019s as if I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorian died moments after the exchange \u2014 found in the bathroom of a Metro-North train by NYPD officers \u2014 having taken a small but fatal dose of fentanyl that was cut into another drug without his knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, his story was few and far between, but in the years since his death in 2016, fatal fentanyl-fueled overdoses have become all too common in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The synthetic opioid \u2014 which is at least 50 times more powerful than morphine and flows into the states from the southern border \u2014 has driven a surge of drug deaths across the country.<\/p>\n<p>In the Big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le, authorities say it can now be found in nearly every illegal pill or drug peddled on the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen anything like this,\u201d said NYC Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan, who worked as a homicide prosecutor during the surge of crack in the city in the late 1980s, and early 90s.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" the vast majority involving fentanyl \u2014 over a 12-month span ending in July 2022, according <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/vsrr\/drug-overdose-data.htm\">to the most recent data<\/a> from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a 125% increase from 2016 when Dorian died.<\/p>\n<p>For the first nine months of 2022, EMS workers rushed to the scene for more than 7,500 calls for overdose, which is on pace to double the tally for the year compared to 2018, according to FDNY data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effect of this drug and the loss that people have suffered because of fentanyl is tremendous and it\u2019s really widespread,\u201d Brennan told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just cuts across everything, age, demographic,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s just heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Integrated_in_the_drug_supply\"><\/span>\u2018Integrated\u2019 in the drug supply<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cutting drugs with another substance to make them stronger is nothing new for dealers, but the highly addictive fentanyl \u2014 which can kill with an amount equivalent to just 10 to 20 grains of salt \u2014 has created a new drug epidemic.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"452\" year.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">DEA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just over a year ago, three Manhattan professionals died on a single day in the winter of 2021 after buying what they believed was cocaine from an illicit, DoorDash-style drug delivery service.<\/p>\n<p>They had no idea the trio of dealers \u2014 who were busted by the feds last year \u2014 had laced the coke they were buying with a dose of fentanyl that proved deadly.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Tarentino, the Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Agency\u2019s New York Office, said these type of fatal overdoses have become the norm \u2014 with the synthetic opioid being responsible for almost two of every three OD deaths across the county, according to the most recent federal data.<\/p>\n<p>In New York City, that figure is even higher, with fentanyl accounting for 81% of drug deaths  over the 12-month span ending in July 2022.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image Agency<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a ridiculous amount of overdoses and poisonings caused by one manmade synthetic opioids, like fentanyl,\u201d said Tarentino. <\/p>\n<p>He pointed the finger at two Mexican cartels \u2014 the Sinaloa Cartel and Jalisco Cartel \u2014 for the flood of drugs that is primarily sourced from China.<\/p>\n<p>Fentanyl has proved to be a boon for dealers thanks to its inexpensive price tag and the ease at which the cartels can manufacture the drug, unlike heroin or cocaine.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>So much so, said Brennan, that in New York City it has essentially replaced heroin as the primary street drug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so integrated into the drug supply, you really can\u2019t trust any drug that you\u2019re buying on the street,\u201d said Brennan.<\/p>\n<p>The crack epidemic \u201cwas nothing like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe flood of drugs that is coming in [the city] seems to be unending, and it keeps morphing, and now it\u2019s morphing into different forms of fentanyl,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/alert\/dea-laboratory-testing-reveals-6-out-10-fentanyl-laced-fake-prescription-pills-now-contain#:~:text=DEA%20Laboratory%20Testing%20Reveals%20that,Dose%20of%20Fentanyl%20%7C%20DEA.gov\">a study by the DEA released in December<\/a>, six out of 10 fake prescription pills seized and analyzed across the country in 2022 contained a fatal dose of fentanyl. In 2021, it was four in 10.<\/p>\n<p>The new trend, according to Tarentino, is what the agency calls fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills \u2014\u00a0such as Xanax, Percocet or 30-milligram oxycodone pills \u2014 being mass-produced by the Cartels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately for the opioid-naive and the substance-use dependent people that are out there they are unsuspectingly purchasing pills that have the lethal dose of fentanyl in them,\u201d said Tarentino. <\/p>\n<p>The fake pills have been flooding the county with the DEA already seizing 379 million lethal doses of fentanyl last year \u2014 double the amount of in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredible,\u201d said Tarentino.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/Dorian-1.jpeg?w=262\" alt=\"Dorian Pippa\" class=\"wp-image-25182940\" width=\"615\" height=\"550\"\/><figcaption>Dorian Pippa died just hours after turning 29 years old from a fatal dose of fentanyl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dorian Pippa was found in the bathroom of a Metro-North train by NYPD officers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Path_to_addiction\"><\/span>Path to addiction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dorian\u2019s struggle with addiction started when he attended the State University of New York as an undergrad trying to find his way and studying <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>s, his mother said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was with oxy first,\u201d said Pippa, referring to the strong painkiller oxycodone. \u201cThe dealers are just giving it to the kids, you know? I never did find out,\u201d she said. \u201cBut he got something with fentanyl in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorian\u2019s drug progression, from prescription pills to heroin, is a well-documented addict\u2019s path due to the opioid epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>But with fentanyl replacing heroin as the dominant street drug, addicts are now forced to go down a new, much more dangerous road, Brennan told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say was not a choice of the people who use the drugs,\u201d the special narcotics prosecutor said. \u201cIt was a choice of the drug suppliers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Not_just_in_New_York_City\"><\/span>Not just in New York City<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll never forget it was Sunday was a very windy day\u2026 I got a text from him at one in the morning saying, \u2018I love you. I\u2019ll see you tomorrow,&#8217;\u201d Suffolk County resident Carole Trottere recently recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later on April 8, 2018, police showed up at her home, telling her her 30-year-old son Alex Sutton had died of a drug overdose in an apartment in Nassau County, having been poisoned by fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had died at seven in the morning approximately, but I didn\u2019t find out until late in the afternoon,\u201d said Trottere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, ironically\u2026 everyone was sort of also pleased [in 2018] the rate of overdose deaths was down, but that\u2019s little solace,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Alex was among the just under 2,300 people who died of a drug overdose between May 2017 and April 2018 in the state outside of New York City, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>That figure has since climbed to above 3,000, where it has hovered since July 2021, the CDC data shows.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/harckham_senate_floor.jpg?w=760\" alt=\"Sen. It\u2019s every corner of the state people who are using without near fatal implications in past years,\u201d state Sen. Peter Harckham (D-Hudson Valley) told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>Harckham said he doesn\u2019t see a solution to stem the tainted supply of drugs and has tried to focus on death prevention through fentanyl testing s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s and overdose centers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a constant multi-point effort,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s shoring up treatment and harm reduction treatment and getting more mental health treatment facilities up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the county, drug deaths have nearly doubled since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>As of July, 102,429 people have died of an overdose in the US, according to the CDC data. In 2016, it was 58,525.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf not for COVID, what we\u2019re going through right now with fentanyl would be the number one health crisis in the past 100 years,\u201d Trottere recalled a New York City Medical Examiner saying at a DEA summit for victims\u2019 families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I feel like, the majority of the population is kind of ignoring it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Additional reporting by Bernadette Hogan<\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
