John Carpenter<\/strong> is getting behind another Blumhouse<\/strong> reboot of one of his horror classics. After Blumhouse knocked it out of the park with its\u00a0Halloween<\/em> revival, the beloved horror studio is now tackling a reboot of\u00a0The Thing<\/em><\/strong>, Carpenter\u2019s 1982 sci-fi horror film based on the\u00a01938 John W. Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?<\/em> Carpenter confirmed he is \u201cinvolved\u201d with\u00a0The Thing<\/em> reboot, which is still in very early stages at Blumhouse Productions.<\/p>\n

Variety confirmed that Blumhouse Productions and John Carpenter are developing a reboot of\u00a0The Thing<\/em>, following Carpenter\u2019s announcement of the project at a panel\u00a0during the Fantasia International Film Festival. The project is still in very early stages, with no other details hammered out.<\/p>\n

Carpenter first revealed the news<\/a> during a virtual panel held Saturday at the genre film festival Fantasia Fest, where he spoke about the upcoming Halloween Kills<\/em>, the highly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed 2018 reboot of Halloween<\/em>. During the Q&A portion of the interview, Carpenter was\u00a0asked if he had talked with Blumhouse chief Jason Blum<\/strong> about directing any projects himself. While Carpenter shut down getting behind the camera for a Blumhouse film, he did drop the surprise reveal of\u00a0The Thing<\/em> reboot.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019ve talked about \u2014 I think he\u2019s going to be working on \u2018The Thing,\u2019 rebooting \u2018The Thing.\u2019 I\u2019m involved with that, maybe. Down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Carpenter wouldn\u2019t go into detail about whether the project would be a prequel, sequel, or remake. But considering Blumhouse\u2019s success with soft-rebooting\u00a0Halloween<\/em> \u2014 bringing back original star Jamie Lee Curtis while introducing a new generation of leads to continue the fight against Michael Myers \u2014 it would not be surprising if they went a similar route with\u00a0The Thing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The thing about\u00a0The Thing<\/em>, however, is that it\u2019s a pretty self-contained story. The narrative follows an Antarctic research team that are attacked by a parasitic alien life form with the ability to assume the shape of its victims. Based on the 1938 novella Who Goes There?<\/em> by John W. Campbell Jr., the story has been adapted several times \u2014 first with the 1951 film\u00a0The Thing From Another World<\/em>, then with Carpenter\u2019s 1982 cult classic starring\u00a0Kurt Russell<\/strong> and Keith David<\/strong>, then with a 2011 prequel by the same name starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead<\/strong> and Joel Edgerton<\/strong> and directed by Matthijs van Heijningen<\/strong> (though notably, that entry was made without Carpenter\u2019s involvement).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unknown whether Russell or David would return to star in\u00a0The Thing<\/em> reboot, or whether the\u00a0Halloween<\/em> app<\/a>roach is the path Blumhouse would take with this property. But Carpenter\u2019s involvement bodes well for the project, especially after the critical and commercial success of 2018\u2019s\u00a0Halloween<\/em>.\u00a0Halloween Kills<\/em>, produced by Blumhouse and directed by David Gorden Green, was recently pushed back to 2021 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.<\/p>\n
