The case will then proceed with or without him and if he is convicted at trial, could face up to five years in prison, the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>The report comes the day before Santos will be sworn into Congress to represent Long Island\u2019s North Shore communities. The Republican topped Democrat Robert Zimmerman in November\u2019s election, but a laundry list of lies exposed in recent weeks has dogged the 34-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Santos has acknowledged he lied about his college education, employment history and religious background as he campaigned for New York\u2019s 3rd District House seat.<\/p>\n<p>He came clean to The Post about his fake life story after the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/19\/nyregion\/george-santos-ny-republicans.html\">New York Times reported<\/a> last month there was no record he worked at top-notch Wall Street firms and no evidence he graduated from Baruch College.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-369.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Santos admitted to lying about his life story as he ran a successful congressional campaign. \" class=\"wp-image-25214914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-369.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-369.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-369.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Santos admitted to lying about his life story as he ran a successful congressional campaign. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The criminal case in Brazil is connected to allegations he spent almost $700 with a stolen checkbook and a fake name at a clothing store in the city of Niter\u00f3i outside Rio de Janeiro\u00a0just before his 20th birthday, the Times reported, citing court records.<\/p>\n<p>He reportedly admitted fraud to the shop owner in August 2009 when he wrote on a popular <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> site in Brazil, \u201cI know I screwed up, but I want to pay.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then in 2010, he and his mother, who died in 2016, told police he swiped the checkbook from a man his mother used to work for and then made the purchases, the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>A judge signed off on a September 2011 charge and ordered him to respond to the case, but Santos was already in the US by then, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Santos told The Post he is not a criminal when responding to the Times\u2019 initial story that detailed his alleged fraud in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI am not a criminal here \u2014 not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world,\u201d Santos said. \u201cAbsolutely not. That didn\u2019t h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for Santos, Joe Murray, told the Times Monday, \u201cI am in the process of engaging local counsel to address this alleged complaint against my client.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-373.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The Republican beat Democrat Robert Zimmerman in November. \" class=\"wp-image-25214916\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-373.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-373.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/george-santos-brazil-charges-373.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Republican beat Democrat Robert Zimmerman in November. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Multiple investigations in the US into Santos are already underway.<\/p>\n<p>The US Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of New York is probing his finances, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/george-santos-federal-investigation\/\">CBS News<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/28\/politics\/george-santos-investigating-federal-nassau-county\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>, as questions have come up about his mysterious spike in wealth.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>\u2019s Office said it was \u201clooking <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-politics-and-policy\/ny-attorney-generals-office-looking-allegations-george-santos-rcna62957\">into a number of issues\u201d<\/a> connected to Santos and the Nassau District Attorney\u2019s Office also confirmed it was opening a probe into him.<\/p>\n<p>For the Brazil case to move ahead, a judge would need to share prosecutors\u2019 request with a federal Justice Ministry in Brazil, which then sends it to the US Justice Department, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Santos does not need to respond at this point, but needs to be notified of the charge.
