\n The head of the US Food and Drug Administration has clarified his remarks about a new COVID-19 treatment \u2014 and insisted politics had nothing to do with his agency\u2019s decision to authorize its emergency use.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been criticized for remarks I made Sunday night about the benefits of convalescent plasma. The criticism is entirely justified,\u201d FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn tweeted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I should have said better is that the data show a relative risk reduction not an absolute risk reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hahn also said the decision to authorize emergency use of convalescent plasma \u2014 which is derived from the blood of people who recovered from the coronavirus \u2014 \u201cwas made entirely by FDA scientists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at FDA do not permit politics to enter into our scientific decisions,\u201d he said in a series<\/a> of tweets Monday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis happ<\/a>ens to be a political season but FDA will remain data driven. On behalf of FDA\u2019s 18,000 career employees, I want to reassure the American public about this commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FDA\u2019s move came after the agency had earlier halted emergency approval for the use of convalescent plasma.<\/p>\n

The agency\u2019s reversal was announced Sunday, one day after President Trump accused \u201cdeep state\u201d opponents within the agency of delaying action on the treatment to hurt his reelection bid against Democrat Joe Biden in November.<\/p>\n

At a news<\/a> conference with Hahn and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar on Sunday, Trump called the FDA\u2019s decision a \u201ctruly historic\u201d development that \u201cwill dramatically expand access to this treatment\u201d and \u201csave countless lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hahn tweeted Monday that the FDA\u2019s scientists relied on \u201csignificant data from the Mayo Clinic and other reliable sources plus a century of experience with convalescent plasma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe unfortunately do not have randomized trials for convalescent plasma but must make decisions based on what we do have from the Mayo Clinic expanded access program,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hahn also said that the emergency authorization was \u201cnot a final approval\u201d that \u201cFDA will continue to monitor its use and will revoke authorization if needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel broader use of plasma will truly benefit many patients but will require further study,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
