\n The Trump administration has reversed course on a planned copper and gold mine in Alaska opposed by environmentalists and a number of Republicans, including Donald Trump Jr., now saying \u201cas currently proposed\u201d it cannot be allowed to continue under the Clean Water Act, according to a report.<\/p>\n

The US Army Corps of Engineers informed the developer of the Pebble Mine at Bristol Bay that it would have to clear environmental hurdles and create a mitigation plan to show how the project would not damage the world\u2019s largest sockeye salmon fishery nearby before it could be approved, Politico reported on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat effectively is how the project is killed,\u201d a person close to the plan told Politico. \u201cThis one had a huge number of problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s oldest son and Vice President Mike Pence\u2019s former chief of staff Nick Ayers came out against the mine earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a sportsman who has spent plenty of time in the area I agree 100%. The headwaters of Bristol Bay and the surrounding fishery are too unique and fragile to take any chances with. #PebbleMine,\u201d Donald Jr. wrote on Twitter<\/a>, linking to a similar posting by Ayers.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Canadian company will unnecessarily mine the USA\u2019s greatest fishery at a severe cost. This should be stopped and I believe @POTUS will do so!,\u201d Ayers said.<\/p>\n

GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska praised the Corps actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand, respect, and support this decision. I agree that a permit should not be issued,\u201d Murkowski, the chairwoman of \u00a0the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement on Monday. \u201cAnd I thank the administration for its commitment to the protection of this world-class watershed and salmon fishery.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its letter, the Corps said \u201cdischarges at the mine site would cause unavoidable adverse impacts to aquatic resources\u201d in the region, echoing the concerns of environmentalists, conservationists and commercial fishermen.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Corps said it would approve the plan, saying it wouldn\u2019t pose an environmental hazard.<\/p>\n

The mine would be built near the headwaters of the salmon fishery, which spawns 11 percent of the world\u2019s wild sockeye salmon.<\/p>\n

Tom Collier, the chief executive of Pebble Limited, denied that the action will scuttle the mine project.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t see this as a huge hurdle, or a huge challenge,\u201d Colliers told the Anchorage Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The mine\u2019s developers have said the area holds 57 billion pounds of copper, 71 million ounces of gold and 345 million ounces of silver.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
