\n Finger lickin\u2019? Gross!<\/p>\n

KFC has temporarily dropped its \u201cfinger lickin\u2019 good\u201d slogan because it \u201cdoesn\u2019t feel quite right\u201d during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

The fried-chicken chain admitted its 64-year-old tagline doesn\u2019t work as well at a time when officials have urged people not to touch their faces to stop the virus from spreading.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe find ourselves in a unique situation \u2014 having an iconic slogan that doesn\u2019t quite fit in the current environment,\u201d Catherine Tan-Gillespie, KFC\u2019s global chief marketing officer, said in a Monday statement announcing the move.<\/p>\n

KFC made the change official with a 30-second ad showing the words \u201cfinger lickin’\u201d blurred out on its billboards and chicken buckets. The company emphasized that its food isn\u2019t changing and that the slogan will return \u201cwhen the time is right.\u201d<\/p>\n

While \u201cit\u2019s finger lickin\u2019 good\u201d likely wasn\u2019t meant to be public health advice, the United Kingdom\u2019s Advertising Standards Authority fielded 163 complaints in March about a KFC ad that showed people licking their fingers, according to the BBC.<\/p>\n

KFC ultimately pulled the ad, which the complainers feared would encourage behavior that could spur the spread of the deadly COVID-19 bug, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s tongue-in-cheek marketing ploy followed a tough quarter for KFC and parent company Yum Brands, which also owns Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.<\/p>\n

KFC suffered a 21 percent drop in same-store sales from April through June as the pandemic forced the chain to temporarily close about 6,000 of its 24,000 restaurants by mid-April, Yum Brands said in an Aug. 5 filing. Roughly 95 percent of the chain\u2019s stores were open by the end of the quarter, which helped sales improve, the company said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
