\n The average American will flush about $11,198 down the toilet over the course of their lifetime \u2013 in the form of toilet paper, according to new research.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s enough money to buy a sedan, a Rolex or a Tiffany & Co. engagement ring.<\/p>\n

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans found the average respondent spent $182 on toilet paper every year, as well as an additional $15 per month since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n

Commissioned by bidet brand TUSHY and conducted by OnePoll, the survey also probed respondents\u2019 opinions about single-use household items, as well as their adoption of reusable and cost-effective alternatives.<\/p>\n

The average respondent reported using 159 rolls of toilet paper, 145 rolls of paper towels and 118 disposable razors annually.<\/p>\n

Yet nearly three-quarters of respondents said they try their best to lead a \u201csustainable\u201d lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Sixty-nine percent of respondents said they feel guilty about using single-use disposable products around the home.<\/p>\n

And 66 percent of respondents said they would like to be more sustainable in their household purchases, but don\u2019t think they can afford to.<\/p>\n

The most commonly owned reusable alternatives included reusable grocery bags (62 percent), a reusable coffee mug or cup (61 percent) and a reusable water bottle (59 percent) \u2013 making it easy to see why half of respondents named the kitchen the \u201cmost sustainable\u201d room in their house.<\/p>\n

When it comes to reusable alternatives in the room that the largest number of respondents identified as the \u201cleast sustainable\u201d in their home \u2013 the bathroom \u2013 39 percent said they currently own a stainless steel razor.<\/p>\n

And nearly three in 10 respondents own a bidet, with an additional 42 percent saying they would consider purchasing one if it could save them money.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery few people realize how much money they\u2019re spending in paper products annually, let alone the environmental cost of producing these products,\u201d said Miki Agrawal, TUSHY\u2019s Founder & Chief Creative Officer.<\/p>\n

The survey also probed respondents\u2019 knowledge about the environmental impact of producing single-use paper products.<\/p>\n

When asked to estimate how many gallons of water it takes to make one roll of toilet paper \u2013 37 gallons \u2013 the average respondent missed the mark at 19 gallons.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvesting in reusable alternatives that are designed to last for years not only helps to reduce your environmental footprint, but it can also help you to cut significant expenses that you probably haven\u2019t even considered trying to eliminate,\u201d Miki added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to upgrade our toilet habit from messy dry toilet paper to a refreshing stream of clean water.\u201d<\/p>\n
