The sweeping 2018 law was aimed at limiting the ability of Meta and other tech giants to gather and use the personal data of users without their consent.<\/p>\n<p>The EU regulators said Meta violated the GDPR law by requiring Facebook and Instagram users to enter a \u201ccontract\u201d by accepting its terms of service to gain access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s \u2013 and using that approval to process their personal data for the purpose of targeted advertising. The fines stemmed from individual complaints aimed at each of the platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Meta had argued the contract language was legal justification for its data practices in Europe. But the DPC ruled Meta users received\u00a0\u201cinsufficient clarity as to what processing operations were being carried out on their personal data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regulators instructed Meta to bring its data practices within the country into compliance within a three-month period, according to the DPC. The company earned $118 billion in ad revenue in 2021 alone.<\/p>\n<p>In a lengthy statement, Meta strongly pushed back on the decision and indicated it will appeal, setting up what is expected to be a lengthy legal battle with European regulators.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe debate around legal bases has been ongoing for some time and businesses have faced a lack of regulatory certainty in this area,\u201d Meta said in the statement. \u201cWe strongly believe our approach respects GDPR, and we\u2019re therefore disappointed by these decisions and intend to appeal both the substance of the rulings and the fines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meta argued that regulators have failed to provide \u201cclarity\u201d on what constitutes an appropriate legal basis for data processing in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The company added that it would be \u201chighly unusual for a social media service not to be tailored to the individual user.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook and Instagram are inherently personalized, and we believe that providing each user with their own unique experience \u2013 including the ads they see \u2013 is a necessary and essential part of that service,\u201d the company added.<\/p>\n<p>The latest action by Ireland-based regulators are part of an ongoing crackdown on Meta\u2019s operations in Europe. The DPC has 11 other open inquiries into Meta\u2019s operations in Europe and has already imposed penalties for the equivalent of more than $1.37 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Meta has been sharply critical of the regulatory effort \u2013 at one point threatening to shut down Facebook and Instagram operations in Europe entirely during a dispute over data transfer laws.<\/p>\n<p>The legal battle is yet another headache for Meta, which has already warned of sagging ad revenue after Apple made changes to its data privacy rules. <\/p>\n<p>Shares of Meta have plunged 62% over the last 12 months as the Zuckerberg-led company makes an expensive, troubled shift toward metaverse <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.
