Wade decision that had legalized abortion nationwide after one day earlier delivering an\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/us-supreme-court-strikes-down-new-york-limits-concealed-handguns-2022-06-23\/\">important ruling<\/a>\u00a0expanding gun rights.<\/p>\n<p>During her hourlong conversation with University of California, Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, Sotomayor did not mention by name the abortion ruling, called Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization. Potential rulings could end\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/us-supreme-court-tackles-harvard-unc-race-conscious-admissions-2022-10-31\/\">affirmative action<\/a>\u00a0policies used by colleges and universities to increase enrollment of Black and Hispanic students, hobble a federal law called the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/us-supreme-court-poised-hear-alabama-voting-rights-fight-2022-10-04\/\">Voting Rights Act<\/a>\u00a0and make it easier for businesses to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/web-designers-anti-gay-marriage-stance-goes-us-supreme-court-2022-12-05\/\">refuse\u00a0service <\/a>to LGBT people based on free-speech rights.<\/p>\n<p>The addition of three justices appointed by Republican former President Donald Trump \u2013 Neil Gorsuch in 2017, Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 and Amy Coney Barrett in 2020 \u2013 gave the court its current conservative super-majority.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/2022-10-17T154534Z_2101067867_RC2LYU982JZJ_RTRMADP_3_USA-ABORTION-NORTH-CAROLINA.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Demonstrators gather in front of Planned Parenthood after the United States Supreme Court ruled in the Dobbs v. Polls show that the court\u2019s public approval has reached record lows.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Justice Elena Kagan in September said that the<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/us-supreme-court-risks-its-legitimacy-by-looking-political-justice-kagan-says-2022-09-14\/\"> court\u2019s legitimacy could be\u00a0imperiled<\/a>\u00a0if Americans come to view its members as trying to impose personal preferences on society. In October, conservative Justice Samuel Alito, who authored the Dobbs opinion,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/supreme-courts-alito-says-abortion-draft-leak-made-justices-targets-2022-10-26\/\">warned\u00a0against questioning the court\u2019s integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At Wednesday\u2019s conference, Chemerinsky noted that he had never before seen his law students so discouraged about the Supreme Court. Sotomayor responded that there is value in lawyers fighting for those who have been wronged even if they do not ultimately prevail.<\/p>\n<p>Sotomayor, appointed to the court by Democratic former President Barack Obama in 2009, expressed optimism that the direction of the court will change in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may take time but I believe we will get back on the right track,\u201d Sotomayor added.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
