You might be better off without one \u2014 at least, one permanently fixed to your keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably seen countless keyboards with integrated number pads, or there might be one on your keyboard right now. They provide a grid layout for quickly entering numbers, which helped make the transition from calculators to desktop computers less painful. Over the years, it has remained a fixture in PC keyboards, even as many people just use the number row.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Does_My_Wrist_Hurt\"><\/span>Why Does My Wrist Hurt?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying number pads are bad, or they shouldn\u2019t exist, because they\u2019re obviously useful to many people \u2014 especially anyone working in Excel, or playing PC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s with custom bindings and macros. However, they do usually come with a trade-off: ergonomics.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few easy ways to make yourself comfortable at a computer and reduce physical strain: sit up straight in a chair, don\u2019t sit too close to the monitor, and keep your hands at or below your elbow level, and so on. As <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mayoclinic.org%2Fhealthy-lifestyle%2Fadult-health%2Fin-depth%2Foffice-ergonomics%2Fart-20046169&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">Mayo Clinic explains<\/a>, \u201cproper office ergonomics \u2014 including correct chair height, adequate equipment spacing and good desk posture \u2014 can help you and your joints stay comfortable at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to keep in mind how your arms are positioned. Ideally, they should be straight out in front of you, but full-size keyboards with number pads can make that much more difficult. If you use a mouse with your right hand, the home cluster and number pad eats into your available mouse space. That either means pushing the keyboard more to the left, or leaving your mouse far on the right side. Both options mean one or both of your arms will sit at a weird angle when using your computer, which can hurt after a while.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve certainly noticed more fatigue when working with a full-size keyboard, and others here at <em>How-To Geek<\/em> have echoed similar problems. Even though I love the look and feel of my <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pckeyboard.com\/page\/product\/NEW_M\">Unicomp Model M keyboard<\/a>, it\u2019s so massive that it pushes my mouse pad to nearly the end of my desk. I mostly stick to smaller keyboards, like the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amazon.com\/dp\/B098JPSVKY?tag=lsmedia-13638-20\">Logitech MX Keys Mini<\/a>, which leaves plenty of room for my mouse. That might be less of a problem if I used a mouse with my left hand.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Many_Many_Options\"><\/span>Many, Many Options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thankfully, there is no shortage of options for ditching the number pad or moving it to a more ergonomic position.\u00a0Many desktop keyboards retain a large layout but without the number pad, usually referred to as 80% size, \u201cTenkeyless,\u201d or TKL. Not everyone needs the function row or home cluster, or even separated arrow keys, so even smaller designs are also common. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amazon.com\/dp\/B08JY587T3?tag=lsmedia-13638-20\">Microsoft Number Pad<\/a> is a basic option that connects over Bluetooth, so it can be used with desktops, laptops, and even tablets. There are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mechanical-Numeric-Backlit-Desktop-Computer\/dp\/B07FFLNF5C?tag=lsmedia-13638-20\">other choices<\/a> that use mechanical key switches.<\/p>\n<p>The next time you look at upgrading your computer setup with a new keyboard, it\u2019s worth thinking about how your arms are positioned and if your keyboard might be taking over too much of your desk.
