Unless you\u2019re in the accounting department, it\u2019s probably not very useful, so today we\u2019ll learn how to disable it, or remap it to something else that\u2019s more useful.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people tend to use Caps Lock like a Shift key, so an easy method that some people prefer is to swap it with Shift\u2014but a more interesting idea is to remap it to the Ctrl key since it\u2019s a lot easier to hit the Caps Lock key without moving your typing hand position from the home row than it is to hit the regular Ctrl key.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know you can also disable or remap Caps Lock on your iPad, Mac, or even your Chromebook?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Disable_or_Remap_the_Caps_Lock_Key_in_Windows_Using_PowerToys\"><\/span>How To Disable or Remap the Caps Lock Key in Windows Using PowerToys<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The easiest way to change the Caps Lock key is by <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a>ing Microsoft\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/665780\/all-microsofts-powertoys-for-windows-10-explained\/\">PowerToys and using the built-in Keyboard Remapper to remap the Caps Lock key to something else. First, you\u2019ll need to have installed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/microsoft\/PowerToys\/releases\/\">PowerToys from Github<\/a>, and then open up PowerToys Settings via the Start Menu.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve opened PowerToys Settings, head to Keyboard Manager, and then click the \u201cRemap a key\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-859361\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Snag_f8ae3b4.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Powertoys Keyboard Manager\" width=\"1887\" height=\"1061\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In the Remap keys dialog, you\u2019ll want to click the \u201cType\u201d button under \u201cPhysical Key\u201d, and then press the key you want to remap\u2014in this case you\u2019ll press the Caps Lock key. Once you\u2019ve pressed the key you want to remap, click the OK button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-859362\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Snag_f8ae411.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Powertoys Caps Lock Disable\" width=\"1421\" height=\"913\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019ll click the \u201cType\u201d under \u201cMapped To\u201d and then press another key that you\u2019d like to convert Caps Lock into\u2014in this case we\u2019re going to turn it into a Ctrl button, but you could use it for Shift or any other key you\u2019d like to turn it into. Once you\u2019re done click, OK, and then click OK again to close out of the settings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-859363\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Snag_f8ae440.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"PowerToys Remap to Ctrl\" width=\"1421\" height=\"913\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As long as PowerToys is running on your system, the Caps Lock key will be remapped to the alternative key that you chose. It\u2019s worth checking out all the other features in PowerToys, because it\u2019s well worth running for any system tweaker.<\/p>\n<p>This does mean, however, that if PowerToys closes, the Caps Lock key will return. It also means that it won\u2019t be disabled on the Login screen, which might be very annoying if you\u2019re the kind of person like me who constantly types your password with the Caps lock on by accident. The solution? Use SharpKeys instead, which we detail below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Use Caps Lock as a Modifier Key on Windows<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Disable_or_Remap_Caps_Lock_Using_SharpKeys\"><\/span>How to Disable or Remap Caps Lock Using SharpKeys<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An excellent solution for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/828\/map-any-key-to-any-key-on-windows-xp-vista\/\">remapping keys on any version of Windows is Randy\u2019s SharpKeys, which can be downloaded from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/713|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2Fsharpkeys%2FXPFFCG7M673D4F&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Microsoft Store<\/a> for Windows 10 or 11, or from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/randyrants\/sharpkeys\/releases\">project\u2019s Github page<\/a> for older versions of Windows.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit to SharpKeys over PowerToys? You can remap keys however you like, and they will stay remapped or disabled even if you delete the SharpKeys app entirely\u2014you don\u2019t need any software running in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve downloaded and installed SharpKeys, and clicked through the Windows SmartScreen error messages to run it anyway, you can add a new mapping by clicking Add, selecting the key you want to remap (Caps Lock in this case) and then selecting \u201cTurn Key Off\u201d to disable it entirely, or selecting a new key to remap it to. Click OK, reboot your PC, and you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-859384\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Snag_fa8b82d.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"SharpKeys Add Key\" width=\"1563\" height=\"975\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The one downside to SharpKeys vs the PowerToys utility is that you can\u2019t remap a key combination\u2014using PowerToys you could remap ALT+C to CTRL+C, for example. You can\u2019t do that with SharpKeys.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Under_the_Hood_How_Windows_Key_Re-Mapping_Works\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Under the Hood: How Windows Key Re-Mapping Works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Windows doesn\u2019t have a default setting to allow for disabling the key, so what we have to do is re-map the key to something non-existent so as to completely disable it. To do this manually, you\u2019d open up regedit.exe and browse down to the following key:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Keyboard Layout<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/image27.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the format of the binary data in the Scancode Map key, with the important parts in bold and various colors:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>00000000 00000000 <strong>02<\/strong>000000 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff8000;\">0000<\/span><span style=\"color: #004080;\">3A00<\/span><\/strong> 00000000<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first 16 zeros are just there to waste space.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201c02\u201d in bold represents how many keys you are going to re-map plus 1. (It really represents the length of the data, but whatever)<\/li>\n<li>The orange bolded \u201c0000\u201d is the key we actually want Windows to map TO, which in this case is nothing, or 0.<\/li>\n<li>The blue bolded \u201c3A00\u201d is the key we are mapping from, in this case the caps lock key.<\/li>\n<li>The next 8 zeros are there to waste space as the null terminator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can map between multiple keys by incrementing the \u201c02\u201d and then adding another of the colorful bold blocks in the middle. To uninstall, you can use the uninstall registry tweak, or you can simply delete the Scancode Map key entirely.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> It\u2019s worth noting that registry hacks can cause problems with your system, and if you have an application that\u2019s already done some keyboard remapping it\u2019s possible that applying these registry hacks could break something.
