\n Rudy Giuliani \u2014 who put cops in New York City\u2019s public schools as mayor \u2014 slammed a growing campaign to boot the NYPD from its role overseeing school safety following the knee-on-the-neck police custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe it\u2019s a good idea to take the NYPD out of the schools That would be a terrible mistake,\u201d Giuliani told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe schools have gotten much safer. But there are still dangerous schools,\u201d he said, adding\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s wrong to teach children to hate cops.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giuliani, after years of resistance from the Board of Education, won the right in 1998 to give the NYPD the authority to hire, train and supervise unarmed school safety agents to help curb violence and cover-ups of incidents \u2013 an agreement has been intact for a generation.<\/p>\n

He said having the NYPD supervise the 5,000 unarmed safety agents in the schools \u201ccreates a seamless relationship\u201d and makes it easier to dispatch cops during an emergency such as a shooting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s worked well. A lot of teachers as well as children didn\u2019t feel safe,\u201d the former mayor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were mayor running the school system, I would have a police officer in every school.\u201d<\/p>\n

But hundreds of educrats in the city Department of Education\u2019s last week signed a letter sent to Chancellor Richard Carranza urging schools to sever ties with the NYPD.<\/p>\n

The police brutality death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has ignited a push to lessen policing in schools.<\/p>\n

The letter urges the city to take away the NYPD\u2019s oversight on\u00a0unarmed school safety agents \u2014 who guard students and staff \u2014 and retrain them as \u201cSchool Peace Officers\u201d to focus on \u201cde-escalation, media<\/a>tion, and restorative practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eva Moskowitz, who heads Success Academy, the city\u2019s largest charter school network that shares space in buildings with traditional public schools, also said it\u2019s time to transfer authority over the 5,000 safety agents to the DOE.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the police will inevitably be required in some instances where the safety of students or school personnel is threatened, we should start with the presumption that our students are children in need of help, not criminals in need of policing,\u201d Moskowitz said in a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza.<\/p>\n

She noted that the mayor\u2019s School Diversity Advisory Group last year advised him to transfer school safety agents back to the Department of Education.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of recent events, that recommendation was particularly prescient. I urge you to reconsider your rejection of that recommendation,\u201d Moskowitz said.<\/p>\n

But like Giuliani, the school safety agents union\u2019s president opposed the push to remove the NYPD of its duties over school security as uninformed and dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was around in 1998. At the time students were bringing in box cutters and knives to schools. The schools were out of control,\u201d said Gregory Floyd, head of Teamsters Local 237.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe schools were covering up serious crimes such as assaults and rapes. No principal wants his or her school identified as crime-ridden,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Floyd said the NYPD has professionalized the position of school safety agent and has imposed strict vetting system for hiring.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the school system did the hiring, there were school safety agents who were sexual predators and gang members,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
