Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y in my own skin. I would wear bras that were too small for me, and I\u2019d wear two, play it down until there was nothing girl about me,\u201d Twain told the Sunday Times in December. \u201cMake it easier to go unnoticed. Because, oh my gosh, it was terrible \u2014 you didn\u2019t want to be a girl in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said abuse made her struggle to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/12\/21\/shania-twain-is-unashamed-of-showing-off-naked-body-in-her-50s\/\">embrace her femininity<\/a> and sift through her pent-up rage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took a long time to manage that anger. You don\u2019t want to be somebody that attacks me on the street,\u201d the \u201cMan! My mom was quite violent, too. Many nights I went to bed thinking: \u2018Don\u2019t go to sleep, don\u2019t go to sleep, wait \u2019til they are sleeping.\u2019 And I would wake up and make sure everybody was breathing.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The article references her 2011 memoir, \u201cFrom This Moment On,\u201d in which she details a night when her stepfather, Jerry, allegedly beat her mother, Sharon, unconscious and stuck her head into a toilet bowl. Twain said she fought back, hitting Jerry across the back with a chair \u2014 and he swung at her, fist colliding with jaw. She was 11 at the time.<\/p>\n<p>She also claimed her stepfather \u201cphysically and psychologically\u201d abused her, confirming there was sexual abuse involved \u2014 beginning when she was 10 \u2014 but declined to share anymore. Twain also did not include it in her book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUh huh, uh huh. I\u2019m not going to go into details about it,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t mind saying it, because I do think it\u2019s important that people understand you can survive these things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel the sexual abuse goes hand in hand with the physical and psychological abuse when it\u2019s somebody you know. I learned to block it out,\u201d she added. \u201cAbusers need to manipulate you, whether it\u2019s before or after, and what I said to myself is: \u2018OK, there\u2019s something wrong with this person, and that person is not well.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Nashville Songwriters\u00a0Hall of Fame inductee claims she never dreamed of stardom, only using songwriting as an \u201cescape\u201d from a violent \u2014 and hungry \u2014 reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re hungry you can\u2019t do anything about it, but distract yourself from the hunger. And it really works.
