<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       There\u2019s no time like the present to cushion a potential fall.<\/p>\n<p> As recession fears loom \u2014 perhaps into next year \u2014 and tech companies like Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.02%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Salesforce<br \/>\n        CRM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200515854\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.63%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0lay off thousands of workers, some Americans are bracing for the worst, such as losing their jobs, even though the job market is still looking fairly strong.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       And in the wake of these worries, a new phrase called \u201ccareer cushioning\u201d has been gaining steam. But what is it, exactly?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/news\/story\/are-you-career-cushioning-5499604\/\" class=\"icon none\">\u201cCareer cushioning\u201d is generally defined<\/a> as a person beginning the process of looking for their next job, or preparing to leave their current employer, while they are still in their present position. Basically, it describes someone attempting to bolster their prospects in the event they lose their job, which should make it easier to land that rebound gig.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of this preparation is doing research on your own, building your networks, and having coffee with people who are in roles that you think you would want to be in,\u201d Jamie Kohn, research director at Gartner\u2019s Human Resources practice, told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p>Other career cushioning moves may include updating your resume and contacting recruiters to discuss potential job opportunities with them, career experts say. And it certainly pays to cut back on spending and shore up your emergency fund so that you are prepared to get by for several months without income.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018Anytime people are anticipating a recession, people look for ways in which to protect themselves.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Career cushioning may be something as overt as getting lunch with someone to expand your professional network, or as subtle as updating your job profile skills on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed and Monster.com. And there is evidence that the latter is already h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening more often: LinkedIn claims 365 million skills\u00a0have been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.linkedin.com\/2022\/october\/linkedin-business-highlights-from-microsoft-s-fy23-q1-earnings\" class=\"icon none\">added<\/a>\u00a0to profiles on its platform over the past 12 months, which is a 43% increase year over year.<\/p>\n<p> Additionally, about 46% of U.S. workers say they are currently looking or planning to look for a new job in the first half of 2023, according to a<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/nearly-half-of-us-workers-plan-to-look-for-a-new-position-in-the-new-year-301702619.html\" class=\"icon none\">\u00a0Robert Half survey<\/a>, up from 41% last year.<\/p>\n<p>While Google<br \/>\n        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.59%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/explore?date=today%205-y&amp;geo=US&amp;q=career%20cushioning\" class=\"icon none\">searches for the words \u201ccareer cushioning\u201d <\/a>have spiked in recent months compared to the last five years, the concept of creating a \u201cplan B\u201d is really an old one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is nothing new,\u201d Brian Marks, professor at the University of New Haven Department of Economics &amp; Business Analytics, told MarketWatch. \u201cIt may be characterized differently than what it was 10 years ago, 15 years ago. But it\u2019s really renaming that which already has existed.\u201d <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>But it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that the concept has resurfaced with a new name, especially considering the recent headlines about mass layoffs in certain sectors, as well as the possibility of an upcoming recession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecession talk definitely gets people spooked,\u201d Kohn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore often than not, as people anticipate economic slowdowns, or volatility and risk associated with their particular employment \u2014 whether it\u2019s an industry or not \u2014 (they) will engage in these type of behaviors,\u201d Marks added. \u201cAny time people are anticipating a recession, people look for ways in which to protect themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the future holds, career cushioning may be smart strategy whether there\u2019s an economic downturn or not.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018I always tell people the best time to get a new job is when you have a current job.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       So who should be career cushioning? In short, anybody who is interested in improving their career and their longterm earning potential, even if they have a job that they like.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI always tell people the best time to get a new job is when you have a current job,\u201d Marks said.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of forward thinking could safeguard workers in the unfortunate situation where they become unemployed, or open doors that might have been closed if workers become stagnant in their current roles.<\/p>\n<p>Kohn likened career cushioning to \u201ccareer planning,\u201d and said it\u2019s \u201calways a good strategy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: <\/strong>This 28-year-old grew her pay to $500,000 and found work-life balance<\/p>\n<p>There are few downsides to career cushioning \u2014 as long as workers aren\u2019t brazenly signaling to their company any desire to leave. One thing career cushioners can do is select the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a507508\/let-recruiters-know-you-re-open-to-work?lang=en\" class=\"icon none\">Open to Work<\/a>\u201d tab on their LinkedIn profile, which signals that they are willing to discuss employment opportunities despite currently having a job.
