Kevin McCarthy as Speaker. It was earlier updated to reflect Rep. Andy Harris\u2019s (R-Md.) vote for McCarthy on the 13th ballot. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) made significant gains in his bid to become the next House Speaker on Friday after a deal\u00a0with his detractors\u00a0swung 14 votes in his favor. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>McCarthy won 13 new votes on the 12th ballot, and picked up a 14th new vote on the 13th ballot.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not enough to make McCarthy the\u00a0Speaker, as\u00a0he needs a majority of those present.\u00a0But his 214 votes on the 12th ballot fell just three shy of the number needed to seize the gavel, and it marked the first time this week that he bested the Democratic leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), who had led every previous ballot. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries received 211 votes,\u00a0reflecting one Democratic absence.\u00a0The seven Republicans who maintained their opposition to McCarthy split their votes between two of their GOP colleagues. Two additional Republicans were absent during Friday\u2019s vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear if McCarthy can win over his final opponents. But it does represent real progress for the embattled Speaker-in-waiting after a difficult and historic week in which 20 Republicans repeatedly blocked his path. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u00a0are the Republicans\u00a0who switched sides. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>McCarthy \u2018Noes\u2019 who are now \u2018Yes\u2019 (14)<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rep. Dan Bishop (N.C.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bishop was the first of the group of 20 to switch sides by virtue of the alphabet. Republicans backing McCarthy rose and gave him a loud ovation after he announced on the floor his vote for McCarthy, on the 12<sup>th<\/sup> ballot. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep.-elect Josh Brecheen (Okla.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rep. Michael Cloud (Texas)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Andrew Clyde (Ga.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>lause from McCarthy supporters also followed the announcements by Brecheen, Cloud and Clyde as they announced their support for McCarthy.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rep. Byron Donalds (Fla.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Donalds, in just his second term in Congress, was thrown into the spotlight this week when he became the first McCarthy supporter to switch to the opposition, in the third ballot, and was later nominated by the detractors to challenge McCarthy directly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet Donalds spent most of Thursday playing a central part of the talks with McCarthy\u2019s allies. In the 12<sup>th<\/sup> ballot as the votes changed, he was not nominated against McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Paul Gosar (Ariz.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gosar voted for McCarthy on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Andy Harris (Md.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harris did not vote for McCarthy on the first 12 ballots, but he switched his vote to McCarthy on the thirteenth ballot. Shortly afterwards, he explained his reasoning in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWashington and Congress are broken,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the agreement we were able to finalize over the last few days is implemented, it will be the greatest change in how the House operates and becomes much more responsive to the American people in a least two generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep.-elect Anna Paulina Luna (Fla.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPending negotiations in good faith \u2026 with this entire conference, Kevin McCarthy,\u201d Luna said to applause.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Luna, who has been an adamant opponent of McCarthy, told reporters Thursday night that talks in Emmer\u2019s office had been \u201call net positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was one day after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realannapaulina\/status\/1610679432968306690?s=20&amp;t=o2g8B4yOdd1LLMYzoiHqAQ\">she issued a\u00a0<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realannapaulina\/status\/1610679432968306690?s=20&amp;t=o2g8B4yOdd1LLMYzoiHqAQ\"><\/a>statement\u00a0saying \u201cI did not come to Congress to conduct business as usual or bow to the notion that this is just \u2018how things are done in D.C.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have made my position clear, and it remains the same as when you elected me: I will stand strong until we get a Speaker who will fight for the American people and fix the chaos and corruption in our nation\u2019s Capitol,\u201d she added. \u201cI will continue to stand firm against all forms of pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rep. Mary Miller (Ill.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Miller also said she would back McCarthy based on pending talks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Ralph Norman (S.C.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Norman, another Freedom Caucus member, backed McCarthy on the floor.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Earlier he had said he was still reviewing the details of the agreement. But during an appearance on Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Friday morning, he said the deal includes \u201ccommonsense proposals\u201d he and others put forward weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be looking at it, seeing if it\u2019s enforceable, seeing if it\u2019s something that will \u2014 will make \u2014 it \u2014 all of it makes sense, and we\u2019re excited about having these changes made which should have, should have been done anyway,\u201d he said. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t have to ask for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep.-elect Andy Ogles (Tenn.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asked Thursday if he could ever change from voting for people other than McCarthy, Ogles said: \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, he voted for the California Republican.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perry has been one of the most vociferous opponents of McCarthy with his statements in recent weeks. On Friday, he backed him on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at a turning point. I\u2019ve negotiated in good faith, with one purpose: to restore the People\u2019s House back to its rightful owners,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cThe framework for an agreement is in place, so in a good-faith effort, I voted to restore the People\u2019s House by voting for McCarthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perry had spent long hours in the negotiations, and had expressed sharp reservations with McCarthy that have to do more with personal distrust than with anything more tangible that McCarthy might be able to provide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at a Reagan moment \u2014 \u2018trust but verify,\u2019\u201d Perry tweeted Thursday night. \u201cThe devil is in the details, and we\u2019ll take our time to ensure it\u2019s right, not easy. One way or another, the status quo must go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on Friday, his vote moved McCarthy a little closer to his goal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Roy, former chief of staff to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), has been at the forefront of the negotiations with McCarthy\u2019s allies and once the deal was close, he was expected to back McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Roy, more than most of the detractors, has been consistent in his specific demands, which center around assurances that all legislation \u2014\u00a0particularly government spending bills \u2014 receive a robust debate and a separate floor vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If a deal emerges, it will be because Roy has endorsed it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still talking. \u2026 I can\u2019t speak to where the numbers are,\u201d Roy said Friday just before noon. \u201c[We\u2019ve] had the guts of something that I believe in for a number of days. But you\u2019ve got to get it all kind of worked out and work with the various interests in the conference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep.-elect Keith Self (Texas)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are making progress,\u201d the lawmaker-elect said, before naming McCarthy as his choice for Speaker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noes (6)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Andy Biggs (Ariz.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biggs, a former chair of the far-right Freedom Caucus, was among the earliest \u2014\u00a0and loudest \u2014\u00a0critics of McCarthy, challenging the long-time Republican leader for the Speaker\u2019s spot in the GOP\u2019s closed-door nomination vote in November, and then again on the House floor this week.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday morning,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/josh_hammer\/status\/1611373095545352192?cxt=HHwWgMDRieDS39wsAAAA\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/josh_hammer\/status\/1611373095545352192?cxt=HHwWgMDRieDS39wsAAAA\">he retweeted a Newsweek column<\/a>\u00a0praising McCarthy\u2019s conservative opponents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boebert, a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus, told Fox News\u2019s Sean Hannity Wednesday night that she will not support McCarthy \u2014 even after former President Trump, of whom she is a close ally, urged the conference to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to support Kevin McCarthy, Sean,\u201d she told the television host.<\/p>\n<p>While those comments were made before House Republicans announced their tentative deal, Boebert\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nicholaswu12\/status\/1611166158887043072?s=20&amp;t=nkApGDvENM5feBgXP6w3xg\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nicholaswu12\/status\/1611166158887043072?s=20&amp;t=nkApGDvENM5feBgXP6w3xg\">told reporters<\/a>\u00a0Thursday night, \u201cI am not a part of any negotiation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep.-elect Eli Crane (Ariz.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asked Thursday if there is anything McCarthy can do to win his support, Rep.-elect Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) said: \u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gaetz, who has expressed opposition to McCarthy since the internal GOP election in November, told reporters Thursday night that he is not supportive of the tentative deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s correct,\u201d he said, clarifying his continued opposition to McCarthy after being briefed on the new terms. Pressed on what his issues are with the deal, he responded, \u201cIt results in Kevin McCarthy becoming the Speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Bob Good (Va.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good, another McCarthy opponent from the start,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dylanewells\/status\/1611030985017102339?s=20&amp;t=rRXOusWJPBtCrDUONfE0eQ\"><\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dylanewells\/status\/1611030985017102339?s=20&amp;t=rRXOusWJPBtCrDUONfE0eQ\">told reporters<\/a>\u00a0Thursday that he will never vote for McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never have to ask me again if I\u2019m a \u2018no\u2019 Kevin McCarthy. I will never vote for Kevin McCarthy,\u201d Good said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Matt Rosendale (Mont.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rosendale voted for Rep.
