An elementary school teacher was injured after a 6-year-old student opened fire in her classroom.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\">\n<div id=\"section-63b991d0773bf-paragraph-slot\" class=\"lazyload-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to Police Chief<strong> Steve Drew<\/strong> in a press conference, the incident took place in a first-grade classroom at <strong>Richneck Elementary School<\/strong> in Newport <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>, Virginia, on Friday. Without going into a lot of detail, police said an altercation occurred in the room, and the young child fired a single round from a handgun at the unidentified teacher. Drew mentioned that the incident was \u201cnot an accidental shooting,\u201d and it also didn\u2019t seem the two knew each other beyond the classroom. The shooting was reported at around 2 p.m., and authorities responded \u201cwithin minutes\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe did not have a situation where someone was going around the school shooting. We have a situation in one particular location where a gunshot was fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Related: At Least 10 People Shot At French Montana Music Video Shoot In Miami<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\">\n<div id=\"section-63b991d0773c4-paragraph-slot\" class=\"lazyload-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The teacher \u2013 who was described as being a woman in her 30s \u2013 was rushed to a local hospital. At this time, Drew noted in the press conference that her injuries \u201care still considered life-threatening, but there was some improvement [in] the last update we got.\u201d No students were harmed, and the young child involved in the incident was taken into custody:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe is right now in police custody. We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p>Drew <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lauded the response from the \u201cheroic\u201d faculty and staff members in helping to move the students to the gymnasium and keeping everyone calm. He added:<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\">\n<div id=\"section-63b991d0773c7-paragraph-slot\" class=\"lazyload-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe No. 1 process right now is to make sure we have counselors with our most precious thing we have, right \u2014 our students \u2014 and to get them back acquainted with their parents. That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Following the altercation, parents were understandably shocked and afraid. According to <em>ABC News<\/em>, one parent said her \u201cheart stopped\u201d when she found out about what happened at her 9-year-old son\u2019s school:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was freaking out, very nervous, just wondering, was that one person my son. But he\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\">\n<div id=\"section-63b991d0773ca-paragraph-slot\" class=\"lazyload-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Newport News Mayor <strong>Phillip Jones<\/strong> expressed that the kids\u2019 safety is their \u201ctop priority\u201d in the press conference, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a dark day for Newport News, we\u2019re going to learn from this and we\u2019re going to come back stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p>Newport News Public Schools Superintendent <strong>Dr. George Parker<\/strong> then said Richneck Elementary School will be closed on Monday. He also stressed the importance of stopping gun violence in schools, saying:<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height:120px;width:100%;float:none;\">\n<div id=\"section-63b991d0773cd-paragraph-slot\" class=\"lazyload-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in shock, and I\u2019m disheartened. I really feel we need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe. We need the community\u2019s support, continued support, to make sure that guns are not available to youth and I\u2019m sounding like a broken record today, because I continue to reiterate that: that we need to keep the guns out of the hands of our young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Moving forward, Drew stated an investigation into the situation has been launched:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll get the investigation done, there\u2019s questions we\u2019ll want to ask and find out about.
