Here\u2019s how you can use PowerToys to remap your favorite (or least favorite!) shortcuts.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Download_PowerToys_from_Microsoft_and_Install_It\"><\/span>Download PowerToys from Microsoft and Install It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>PowerToys doesn\u2019t come preinstalled on Windows; you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a> it manually. Microsoft recommends that you <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/microsoft\/PowerToys\/releases\">download PowerToys directly from GitHub<\/a>. Most Windows desktops and laptops out there use 64-bit Intel or AMD processors, so download the installer that has \u201cx64\u201d in the name somewhere. You can always see what CPU is in your PC, and then look up the model number to be sure. The only slight downside is that the version on the Microsoft Store is updated a bit more slowly than the version on GitHub, so you\u2019ll have to wait a bit longer for bug fixes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you want you can install PowerToys via a command line as well. There are two choices: \u201cRemap a Key\u201d and \u201cRemap a Shortcut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830847\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/keyboard-manager.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Make sure the toggle is set to &quot;On.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The names mostly speak for themselves. \u201cRemap a Key\u201d lets you map a key to a different key, a key to a shortcut, or a key to a function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Windows Task Manager: The Complete Guide<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a silly example, you could use \u201cRemap a Key\u201d to map the \u201cT\u201d key to \u201cCtrl+V\u201d so that pressing \u201cT\u201d would trigger the paste function. You could map the \u201c[\u201d and \u201c]\u201d keys to \u201cVolume Down\u201d and \u201cVolume Up,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_tip\"><p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> You can select a key, shortcut, or function, using the drop-down menus, or you can click \u201cType.\u201d If you click \u201cType,\u201d you just need to press the key you want instead of scrolling through the list.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830849\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/remap-keys-example.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"An example mapping the &quot;[&quot; key to volume down and the &quot;]&quot; key to volume up. \" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re mostly constrained by the fact that there aren\u2019t many keys on your keyboard that can reasonably be rebound to other keys, shortcuts, or functions without impinging your ability to use your computer normally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemap a Shortcut\u201d is more useful in that regard. Unlike \u201cRemap a Key,\u201d \u201cRemap a Shortcut\u201d allows you to combine multiple keystrokes and map them to another shortcut or function, and you can even make the remapping application specific. That gives you a ton of flexibility and lets you work around almost any preexisting shortcuts that might cause a conflict.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>30 Essential Windows Key Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Select your new key combination, select the shortcut or function you want to map the new key combination to, and then pick the application you want to use it with.<\/p>\n<p>Leave \u201cTarget App\u201d blank to make the remap system-wide. If you want a remap to apply only to a specific program, you need to enter the program\u2019s executable name into the box.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_tip\"><p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> You can open Terminal and enter the command \u201ctasklist\u201d to get a list of the processes currently running. It will display the name you need to enter into the \u201cTarget App\u201d box under the \u201cImage Name\u201d column.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830855\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/steps-1-2-3.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Enter your desired shortcut, select what key, shortcut, or function you want it mapped to, and then select which application you want to use it with .\" width=\"650\" height=\"251\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now instead of mapping \u201c[\u201d and \u201c]\u201d to \u201cVolume Down\u201d and \u201cVolume Up,\u201d you can map \u201cCtrl+[\u201d to \u201cVolume Down\u201d and \u201cCtrl+]\u201d to \u201cVolume Up,\u201d and you don\u2019t need to worry about messing with your ability to insert brackets or curly brackets at all. If you wanted, you could map \u201cCtrl(Left)+Shift(Right)+T\u201d to \u201cDelete\u201d and make it <em>only <\/em>apply in GIMP.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830854\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gimp-bind.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"An example remapping. &quot;Ctrl+Shift+T&quot; has been mapped to the &quot;Delete&quot; function, but only in GIMP.\" width=\"650\" height=\"240\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Plenty of applications let you remap shortcuts or functions within their settings, but some don\u2019t \u2014 they\u2019re ideal candidates for the PowerToys remapping utility. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/powertoys\/keyboard-manager\">Microsoft specifically warns that it may not work well in games<\/a>, though, so test it thoroughly before you join a competitive match.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alternative_Solution_Remap_Keys_in_Windows_11_Using_SharpKeys\"><\/span>Alternative Solution: Remap Keys in Windows 11 Using SharpKeys<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The one drawback to using PowerToys is that the utility needs to be running if you want to keep the key remapping working. Windows actually supports built-in key remapping via the Registry, but it\u2019s so complicated that you\u2019re better off using the open source SharpKeys application to handle it.<\/p>\n<p>SharpKeys will allow you to remap any key to any other key, on any version of Windows, and you can even delete the application when you\u2019re done. The limitation? It can\u2019t handle shortcut key combinations, so you couldn\u2019t remap ALT+C to CTRL+C, but you can use it for things like disabling or remapping the Caps Lock key.<\/p>\n<p>Simply install the application from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/830094|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2Fsharpkeys%2FXPFFCG7M673D4F&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Microsoft Store<\/a> or their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/randyrants\/sharpkeys\/releases\">Github<\/a> repository, launch it, and then you can click the Add button from the interface to bring up the Add New Key Remapping dialog.
