spiked 30% last month \u2014 to the highest tally since early 2022 \u2014 nearly three years after the virus first ravaged the state, a Post analysis shows.<\/p>\n<p>There were 915 deaths linked to coronavirus and its\u00a0variants in the Empire State in December \u2014 about 30 a day \u2014 compared\u00a0with 664 deaths in November.<\/p>\n<p>The monthly death toll hit levels unseen since since February 2022, The Post review of state\u00a0Health Department data found \u2014 and comes despite widely available vaccines and antiviral drugs to treat COVID-19. <\/p>\n<p>Public health experts said the rising rate is proof COVID can still be considered a pandemic rather than a rear-view-mirror nuisance. <\/p>\n<p>The virus has taken more than 77,000 lives in New York since early 2020, data compiled by the US Centers for Disease Control show.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1.1 million Americans\u00a0have died from COVID-related illness, according to the CDC.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>The elderly \u2014 particularly those with other illnesses or who are unvaccinated \u2014 are most at risk for hospitalization or death.<\/p>\n<p>State data show 87% of those who\u2019ve died from COVID are 60 and over, and a majority had heart- or blood-related illnesses. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to health advocates, public fatigue and resistance to nagging recommendations to take precautions \u2014 like masking up \u2014 have contributed to the latest spikes in hospitalizations and deaths. Mask mandates in the city and state were scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have let their guard down a bit, to be honest,\u201d said Dr. Ayman El-Mohandes, dean of CUNY\u2019s Graduate School of Public Health. \u201cIt does appear in the current situation we are seeing\u00a0a surge in new variants and people are less attentive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>El-Mohandes noted colder weather and influx of holiday-season tourists likely had an impact \u2014 but argued \u201cthe pandemic is not over\u201d and \u201cpeople should not be oblivious to the risk.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/covid-5.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The 915 COVID-19 deaths are the most recorded in New York since February 2022.\" class=\"wp-image-25286370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/covid-5.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/covid-5.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/covid-5.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The 915 COVID-19 deaths are the most recorded in New York since February 2022.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Photo by ANGELA WEISS\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last spring, Dr. Anthony Fauci, former chief medical adviser to President Biden, said the US was \u201cout of the pandemic phase\u201d \u2014 though COVID remains very contagious and neither the World Health Organization nor the CDC have downgraded it from pandemic status.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to The Post, the state Health Department said New Yorkers face a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le-demic\u201d of COVID-19, the flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 continues to be a primary concern for public health officials, claiming lives every day in New York State, across the country and around the world,\u201d said DOH spokesman Cort Ruddy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh levels of flu and RSV have also combined to create what is, essentially, a triple-demic this fall and winter. That is why the Department continues to urge all New Yorkers to take precautions to protect themselves and loved ones, including staying up to date on vaccines, including the bivalent booster for COVID-19. That number jumped to 3,960 hospitalizations and 413 ICU patients by Dec. 30 \u2014  and 4,157 hospitalized by Jan. 5, according to the DOH data. <\/p>\n<p>The death rate for the first week of January 2023 has mirrored December, with 62 COVID-linked deaths reported combined from last Wednesday and Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Gov. Hochul said we\u2019re not out of the woods. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge everyone to remain vigilant and continue to use all available tools to keep themselves, their loved ones and their communities safe and healthy,\u201d she said Friday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay up to date on vaccine doses, and test before gatherings or travel. If you test positive, talk to your doctor about potential treatment options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Health Department reported a new Omicron variant \u2014 XBB.1.5.\u2013 is now the most dominant strain, accounting for more than 50% of COVID infections statewide. Officials said the new variant is more contagious because it mutates, allowing it to\u00a0attach to cells and replicate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince it emerged, the COVID-19 virus continues to change,\u201d acting State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. \u201cThe new bivalent booster has been updated to address these changes, which is why it is so important that all New Yorkers 6 months and older get the important protection it offers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He said the bivalent booster provides significant protection against getting very sick or being hospitalized, and those with the vaccination are more than 18 times less likely to die from COVID compared with those who are unvaccinated. <\/p>\n<p>The number of COVID deaths by month in 2022 are: December 915; November 664; October 683; September 486; August 592; July 534; June 464; May 613; April 353; March 400; February 1,652; January 4,592.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
