youth mental health crisis&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Seattle\u2019s public school district is suing some of the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> companies, demanding the platforms pay up for poisoning kids\u2019 brains and making it harder to teach.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed Friday by Seattle Public Schools against companies behind TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat and YouTube is seeking compensatory damages to expand the district\u2019s mental health resources.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>The school district argues the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s worsen a growing youth mental health crisis \u2014 interfering with teachers\u2019 ability to do their jobs and providing grounds for the suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendants have successfully exploited the vulnerable brains of youth, hooking tens of millions of students across the country into positive feedback loops of excessive use and abuse of Defendants\u2019 social media platforms,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattleschools.org\/news\/social-media-case\/\">In a statement Saturday, <\/a>Seattle Public Schools lamented students \u201care struggling with anxiety, depression, thoughts of self-harm, and suicidal ideation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crisis was already growing before the pandemic and research has identified social media as playing a major role in causing mental health problems in youth,\u201d the school said, asserting more than 90% of U.S youth are on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/sm-2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Seattle Public Schools filed a lawsuit against the companies behind social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok.\" class=\"wp-image-25286758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/sm-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/sm-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/sm-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Seattle Public Schools filed a lawsuit against the companies behind social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cResearch tells us that excessive and problematic use of social media is harmful to the mental, behavioral, and emotional health of youth and is associated with increased rates of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The school district said almost 50% of students report spending one to three hours a day on social media in Washington state \u2014 and that 30% say they spend three or more hours on the apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur students \u2013 and young people everywhere \u2013 face unprecedented, learning and life struggles that are amplified by the negative impacts of increased screen time, unfiltered content, and potentially addictive properties of social media,\u201d Superintendent Brent Jones said in a statement<\/p>\n<p>The district alleges social media-caused mental health issues are overwhelming school counselors, social workers, psychologists and nurses and straining its limited resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaxpayers should not bear the burden for the mental health crisis social media companies have created,\u201d the district said.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle is a tech hub, home to both Microsoft and Amazon \u2014 neither of which are plaintiffs. Meta, Snapchat and Google, which owns YouTube, have offices in Seattle, and some of the parents in the district are likely employees of companies being sued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The social media companies have yet to respond, but Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly pushed back on the idea the company has a negative impact on people\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe argument that we deliberately push content that makes people angry for profit is deeply illogical,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10113961365418581\">he wrote on Facebook<\/a> in 2021. \u201cWe make money from ads, and advertisers consistently tell us they don\u2019t want their ads next to harmful or angry content.
