How did you get to be the Number One guy in the world\u2019s Number One city?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eric: \u201cFor 28 years I\u2019ve been preparing to be the second black mayor New York\u2019s ever had.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So you never felt you were judged more harshly because of the color of your skin?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no blanket \u2018yes\u2019 to that answer. I can say a pocket of people think, \u2018Well, he\u2019s not like the one we\u2019d really want to represent us.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have white supporters, Asian supporters. My friends are nice black people. My voters are a melting pot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, I\u2019m a blue-collar civil servant. I did not attend the schools they did. I wasn\u2019t in their same clubs. Not the same criteria. If I had, maybe their attitudes would be different.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, yes, I am aware there\u2019s a list of subjects with that group where I don\u2019t exactly fit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t always feel comfortable with me. I\u2019m just not their kind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese people are fundraisers. Top of every board. At the Met, with the Conservancy. Elite class of the city. Three brothers, two sisters. Dad a butcher from the South. Good person but always running around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother cleaned houses and ironed a thousand pillow cases and shirts. I\u2019d test the iron. Scorch one meant a month\u2019s salary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cDamn, I wish I\u2019d been different. But I was dyslexic. They didn\u2019t know what that was then. I screamed. Words \u2018dumb student\u2019 were scrawled on my chair.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated school. Angry. Wayward. I yelled as a child. Hated the police. Cops arrested me at 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually, my mother poured energy into me through her prayers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_visit_from_Hizzoner\"><\/span>A visit from Hizzoner\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Eric Adams was due at my home 6:30. He called personally to change to 7:30.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My housekeeper had left. He said: \u201cNo problem. I know how to do dishes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hizzoner was prompt. Security types outside. Removing his jacket which my dog hoped to destroy, he inhaled thrown-together deviled eggs and tuna and said: \u201cWorking to keep a roof over our heads, mom saw me enter the Police Department, become lieutenant, captain, state senator, borough president and onto the mayoral campaign trail.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He took two calls. His cell on my table.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then: \u201cI was there when her heart monitor went off. But the doctor said she\u2019d see me make it before her transition. And I then picked myself up sitting at that kitchen table when mommy told me, \u2018Life is pain. Turn pain into purpose.\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That meant meditation. Community college. Re<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>l classes. \u201cA D student, I learned math, English. People began caring for me.
