\n The City Council is planning to amend a portion of the controversial new chokehold law in an attempt to assuage concerns by the NYPD that the ban makes it more dangerous for cops to do their jobs, sources told The Post.<\/p>\n

The changes will affect the part of the law that makes it a crime for an officer to app<\/a>ly pressure to someone\u2019s diaphragm. De Blasio signed the legislation last month.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to add some language to clarify the parameters,\u201d said one council insider.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing we\u2019ve heard is people have said, \u201cIf you touch [someone\u2019s] back you\u2019re going to go to jail,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

A few words will be included to clarify that\u2019s not the case, the source said, adding that council members are still negotiating the exact changes with City Hall officials.<\/p>\n

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan called the diaphragm portion of the bill \u201cdangerous\u201d during a PIX11 interview in July.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny cop who\u2019s ever fought with someone on the street, trying to get him into cuffs, there\u2019s a great possibility that your knee is going to end up on that individual\u2019s back, and now this new law is criminalizing it,\u201d Monahan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe try to avoid that, but in the midst of a fight, it\u2019s pretty hard to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen,\u201d said Monahan. \u201cWhen you have to worry that someone who may have taken a shot at you that you are now arresting, if your knee hits their back, you become the criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a dangerous, dangerous portion of that bill,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Police unions have said the law makes it impossible for cops to safely arrest criminals.<\/p>\n

The council\u2019s Brooklyn delegation is meeting virtually Tuesday night to discuss the issue. Council leadership plans to present the revised bill this Thursday at the council\u2019s regular meeting.<\/p>\n

But some members are concerned the changes won\u2019t protect cops from unwarranted prosecution.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure it goes far enough but we will see,\u201d said Councilman Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island).<\/p>\n

A rep for Council Speaker Johnson and City Hall did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to requests for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
