Last week, the agency said the issue is now part of a broader investigation\u00a0into at least 14 Teslas that have crashed into emergency vehicles\u00a0while using the Autopilot driver assist system.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2021, Tesla has been beta-testing \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d using owners who haven\u2019t been trained on the system but are actively monitored by the company. Earlier this year, Tesla said 160,000, roughly 15% of Teslas now on US roads, were participating. A wider distribution of the software was to be rolled out late in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the name, Tesla still says on its website that the cars can\u2019t drive themselves. Teslas using \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d can navigate roads themselves in many cases, but experts say the system can make mistakes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not saying it\u2019s quite ready to have no one behind the wheel,\u201d CEO Musk said in October.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/tesla-autopilot.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Autopilot features\" class=\"wp-image-25293840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/tesla-autopilot.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/tesla-autopilot.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/tesla-autopilot.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the issue is now part of a broader investigation into at least 14 Teslas that have crashed into emergency vehicles while using the Autopilot driver assist system.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On New Year\u2019s Eve, one of Musk\u2019s most ardent fans posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> that drivers with more than 10,000 miles of \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d testing should have the option to turn off the \u201csteering wheel nag,\u201d an alert that tells drivers to keep hands on the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>Musk replied: \u201cAgreed, update coming in Jan.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear from the tweets exactly what Tesla will do. But disabling a driver monitoring system on any vehicle that automates speed and steering would pose a danger to other drivers on the road, said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing FSD beta, you\u2019re kind of part of an experiment,\u201d Fisher said. \u201cThe problem is the other road users adjacent to you haven\u2019t signed up to be part of that experiment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tesla didn\u2019t respond to a message seeking comment about the tweet or its driver monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>Auto safety advocates and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-traffic-61446678b13177c39d1ea904c74ede2e\">government investigators<\/a>\u00a0have long criticized Tesla\u2019s monitoring system as inadequate. Three years ago the\u00a0National Transportation Safety Board listed poor monitoring\u00a0as a contributing factor in a 2018 fatal Tesla crash in California. The board recommended a better system, but said Tesla has not responded.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s system measures torque on the steering wheel to try to ensure that drivers are paying attention. Many Teslas have cameras that monitor a driver\u2019s gaze. The agency has said that Autopilot is being used in areas where its capabilities are limited and that many drivers aren\u2019t taking action to avoid crashes despite warnings from the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s partially automated systems have been under investigation by NHTSA since June of 2016 when a driver using Autopilot was killed after his Tesla went under a tractor-trailer crossing its path in Florida. Nineteen people have died in those crashes.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Consumer Reports has tested Tesla\u2019s monitoring system, which changes often with online software updates. Initially, the system didn\u2019t warn a driver without hands on the wheel for three minutes. Recently, though, the warnings have come in as little as 15 seconds. Fisher said he isn\u2019t sure, though, how long a driver\u2019s hands could be off the wheel before the system would slow down or shut off completely.<\/p>\n<p>In shutting off the \u201csteering wheel nag,\u201d Fisher said, Tesla could be switching to the camera to monitor drivers, but that\u2019s unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Despite implying through the names that Autopilot and \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d can drive themselves, Fisher said, it\u2019s clear that Tesla expects owners to still be drivers. But the NTSB says human drivers can end up dropping their guard and relying too much on the systems while looking elsewhere or doing other tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Those who use \u201cFull Self-Driving,\u201d Fisher said, are likely to be more vigilant in taking control because the system makes mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t dream of taking my hands off the wheel using that system, just because it can do things unexpectedly,\u201d he said.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
