The first two episodes of the podcast, released on Jan. 9, also mark his return to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Harrison, who took an unplanned hiatus in the middle of <em>The Bachelor<\/em>\u2018s 25th season and never returned to the ABC reality dating juggernaut, explains his silence amid the firestorm that ultimately led to his departure in early 2021. He tracks how the events unfolded behind the scenes, and how he was \u201ccounseled\u201d to stay silent in the press and on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cThe playbook had been thrown out the window,\u201d he says of responding to the snowballing backlash after an <em>Extra<\/em> interview with former <em>Bachelorette<\/em> star Rachel Lindsay nearly two years ago, on Feb. 9, 2021. \u201cThe toughest thing for me was where to turn, what to do,\u201d he says. \u201cI was heartbroken. I was gutted. I was embarrassed. I was mad at myself. I was dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed in myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Adding, \u201cI was sick to my stomach. I lost 20 pounds, I didn\u2019t sleep. I didn\u2019t eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In the interview with Lindsay, Harrison did not denounce allegations of past racism against a contestant, Rachael Kirkconnell, who would go on to win that season with the first-ever Black star of <em>The Bachelor<\/em>, Matt James. (\u201cWell, Rachel, is it a good look in 2018, or is it <em>not<\/em> a good look in 2021? Because there\u2019s a big difference,\u201d he said of the outcry over Kirkconnell attending an \u201cOld South\u201d antebellum-themed party in college in 2018. \u201cIt\u2019s not a good look, ever,\u201d replied Lindsay, who was the first Black star of <em>The Bachelorette.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Harrison\u2019s misstep came amid a pivotal time for the majority white franchise, which was being criticized for mishandling its Black lead. Such behavior from its host highlighted a then-lack of diversity among the franchise\u2019s decision-makers, and it ignited a firestorm for the Warner Bros. TV-produced <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI have not spoken publicly since I left the <em>Bachelor<\/em> franchise,\u201d he says, sharing regrets for not offering an \u201cunedited and unfiltered\u201d explanation sooner. \u201cOne point I was trying to make [in the infamous interview] and did not make eloquently, is people need time to think and to process. \u2026 I wanted to step away. I wanted to think and learn and change and go through everything I went through personally before I had this talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The official decision for Harrison to leave the franchise after hosting<em> The Bachelor<\/em>, <em>The Bachelorette<\/em> and its various spinoff series for 19 years came after weeks of a failed apology tour and behind-the-scenes discussions that ultimately led to his ouster. <em>The Hollywood Reporte<\/em>r reported at the time that Harrison walked away with a confidential settlement and sizable payday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Before that decision was made, Harrison made several public apologies. First, a statement on his Instagram (since removed) apologizing for \u201cwrongly speaking in a manner that perpetuates racism.\u201d Saying, \u201cI will always own a mistake when I make one, so I am here to extend a sincere apology.\u201d He followed that by announcing he would step aside from the franchise so the \u201chistoric season of\u00a0<em>The Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0should not be marred or overshadowed by my mistakes or diminished by my actions.\u201d He then appeared on ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\u2019 <em>Good Morning America<\/em>, where he told Michael Strahan about the work he was doing and his plans to return: \u201cI am committed to progress, not just for myself, also for the franchise.\u201d The latter proved to be the \u201cnail in the coffin,\u201d per sources to <em>THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt was messy, it was disappointing, and it\u2019s just not me,\u201d he says of the initial interview, while apologizing: \u201cThere is nothing in my soul that would ever want to harm anybody, make you [the viewers] feel less than, not seen, belittled and in any way marginalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But Harrison says everything \u201cspun out of control.\u201d And that no one behind-the-scenes was prepared to handle the response. \u201cThere was much more egregious things going in the world, and things that had happened, and so people didn\u2019t really think that it was going to amount to much and that if I apologized, we would be able to move forward,\u201d he says. But \u201ceven after that apology, we were still at ground zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He continues, \u201cThe decision was made, \u2018Ok, apologize,\u2019 which I did. And then, \u2018Don\u2019t speak.\u2019 And that\u2019s what I was counseled. And I tentatively agreed. \u2018Ok, this too shall pass.\u2019 We\u2019ve been through things somewhat like this before, and this too shall pass. Not a big deal. But that noise, in this moment in time, didn\u2019t stop. And that\u2019s where the playbook was thrown out the window and that\u2019s what none of us were prepared for, and that\u2019s what I wasn\u2019t prepared for. Because all of a sudden, this moment and my name because synonymous with this political lightning-in-a-bottle moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Noting an \u201cappetite to destroy and cancel\u201d him, he says, \u201ceverybody was talking about me in this moment, and I wasn\u2019t speaking.\u201d He wanted to have an open dialogue, but that also wasn\u2019t recommended: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t that I wasn\u2019t allowed. But I wasn\u2019t counseled to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He says he knew of certain castmembers whose agents were putting in calls for Harrison\u2019s job while he was sidelined. \u201cThere was blood in the water,\u201d he says. Meanwhile, he says he called cast members, producers, executives and agents to check in, listen and talk. Harrison spoke to a crisis manager, but \u201cnothing prepared any of them for this.\u201d Adding, \u201cI was also astonished at how many people had their hand out. Wanted to get paid for this. Taking advantage of this situation. It\u2019s a bizarre thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Harrison recalls the paparazzi following him and his family, and speaks of the impact to his journalist fianc\u00e9e Lauren Zima, who produces the podcast with Harrison and who guests on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1119-the-most-dramatic-podcast-106075267\/\">the second episode<\/a>. Each morning, they woke up to \u201cnew headlines, a new podcast, a new castmember had said something, and it started all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    While noting the hypocritical nature of him now speaking about the saga on a podcast like so many others in the franchise did at the time, he adds: \u201cIt\u2019s the business, it\u2019s what I signed up for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He continues of the fallout, \u201cIt was <em>Stranger Things<\/em>, the world was upside down. And I attribute that to a lot of things. I think the timing of this is very relevant, at where we were in the world. We were all coming out of two years of being locked up [due to the pandemic], and I think we were all angry and frustrated. And then culturally, what was going on in the world with civil rights. There was a lot of confusion, anger, resentment. It was a very combustible moment in time. And my timing of being sloppy, inappropriate, wrong in that moment, that\u2019s on me, to have not seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Because of the interview, \u201cI rolled a grenade under all that. And I made things worse,\u201d he says of putting a national spotlight on the ABC franchise\u2019s race problem. \u201cI shined a big bright light on more than what needed to be, that was on me. And to have brought that on my house? It was shameful. And it just crushed me. To the bottom of my soul, I was just sick to my stomach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In the weekly podcast, which posts on Mondays, Harrison says that in his nearly two decades working on the show, he never had a say in any behind-the-scenes decisions. \u201cI never once in the 19 years that I was there hired or fired anybody. I never edited the show \u2026 I didn\u2019t cast the show. But I can\u2019t absolve myself because you can\u2019t show up every day and make a big paycheck and just say, \u2018I\u2019m not a part of that.\u2019 That\u2019s not fair. You either are or you aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In the aftermath of Harrison\u2019s stepping aside, ABC\u00a0and producers Warner Horizon vowed to increase the show\u2019s diversity of leads and contestants, and added Jodi Baskerville as the franchise\u2019s first-ever Black executive producer. <em>The Bachelor <\/em>season 27 returns Jan.\u00a023. \u201cWe were working very hard to shift and change and be better. I would like to think I was a part of that,\u201d says Harrison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Ultimately, Harrison says he couldn\u2019t figure out how to fix the situation. Without specifying, he says there was \u201cone night in particular\u201d that he made the call. \u201cI went home and I drew the line in the sand, and that was it. And that was my breaking point. And it was time to take my life back. And it was time to step away and get my life back. And that has been a blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Of the humbling experience overall, he sums up, \u201cI\u2019m not proud of how it went down, I\u2019m not happy about how it went down. But I\u2019m a faithful person. \u2026 It allowed me to have a better life with my kids, to fall in love, to be engaged with the woman I love, to having a much better life than I was living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Now, Harrison says he doesn\u2019t hold anger towards the show. \u201cThe show changed my life. I\u2019m grateful to <em>The Bachelor <\/em>and <em>The Bachelorette<\/em>, I will be forever grateful \u2026 There is no animosity,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And while he hasn\u2019t tuned in to any episodes since he left, he is following along with the ratings. He says the Hometowns episode of James\u2019 season was the last one he watched in 2021, and that the show has changed \u201cdramatically\u201d and is down \u201c50-60 percent\u201d in viewership. \u201cWhen I left, it was still the No. 1 show on TV,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>The Bachelor<\/em> was 5th among adults 18-49 in 2019-2020, tied for 6th with <em>The Bachelorette<\/em> in 2020-2021 and tied for 11th in 2021-2022.
