The necessity to create a legal framework for stablecoins is marked in the latest central bank strategy paper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Published under the headline \u201cNigeria Payments System Vision 2025\u201d, the 83-page <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbn.gov.ng\/Out\/2022\/CCD\/PSMD%20vision%202025%20EDITED%20FINAL.pdf\">report<\/a> from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) considers the development of a regulatory framework for the potential implementation of a stablecoin. According to the document, there is a need to develop a framework, given that stablecoins are likely to become a successful payment mechanism in the country. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-01\/17b12ef4-50a5-4eda-803a-b75d97c6021f.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\">Cast your vote now!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The report also pays attention to the regulation of initial coin offerings (ICOs). It highlights the current absence of regulation in the area, causing the investors\u2019 losses. However, the CBN sees potential for adopting ICOs as a new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to fundraising for capital projects, peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding. Hence, a regulatory framework is also needed \u201cin the event of adoption of an ICO-based investment solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Related: <\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Nigeria set to pass bill recognizing Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the stablecoins and ICOs segment of the report is ways smaller than the one dedicated to Nigerian CBDC, eNaira. The Central Bank considers it a potential \u201cenabler for transformation\u201d in the national economy. It hopes to achieve a final implementation of the currency in 3-5 years. <\/p>\n<p>In December 2022, Nigeria has reduced the amount of cash individuals and businesses can withdraw to $225 and $1,125 per week, respectively in an attempt to push its \u201ccash-less Nigeria\u201d policy and increase the use of the eNaira. <\/p>\n<p>Adoption rates for a CBDC have been low since its launch in 2021.
