There are some unusual requirements to play a bodyguard to a 12-year-old criminal mastermind. For Nonso Anozie<\/strong>, who reunites with his\u00a0Cinderella<\/em> director\u00a0Kenneth Branagh<\/strong> in the upcoming Disney fantasy movie\u00a0Artemis Fowl<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>a few things he had to add to his resume were kendo fighting and \u201ctroll fighting.\u201d More so the kendo, as the troll fighting would be mostly done by his stunt double.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u00a0I did a little stunt this morning, being pushed over by the troll,\u201d Anozie told a group of journalists on the set of\u00a0Artemis Fowl<\/em> in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anozie plays Domovoi Butler, the longtime bodyguard to the titular Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw<\/strong>), whose family has worked alongside the Fowl family for generations. But their relationship is more than just the wealthy heir and his bodyguard (or the iffier connotations of a wealthy heir and his butler).<\/p>\n

\u201cButler\u2019s relationship to Artemis is that of a father figure, an authoritative keeper or guardian, I would say, someone who looks after him. They can have a joke, but after, when it\u2019s time to be serious, it\u2019s time to be serious,\u201d Anozie said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Anozie certainly gets serious for Artemis Fowl<\/em>.\u00a0The British actor is no stranger to physically strenuous roles, having starred in his fair share of action blockbusters like\u00a0Ender\u2019s Game<\/a><\/em>, gangster flicks like\u00a0RocknRolla<\/em>, and war films like\u00a0Atonement<\/em>. But few other films required him to do\u00a0physical training, fitness training, and kendo training on top of that:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe trained for quite a long period. I\u2019m doing a lot of physical training, fitness training, and we trained for about a month and a half before we started shooting. I don\u2019t know if you saw a [kendo] fight? But there\u2019s a [kendo] fight with Juliet Butler and I. It\u2019s very much a tradition that we pass down through the generations, and she\u2019s going to be the next Butler, so we\u2019re \u2014 I\u2019m training her in self defense and training her in martial arts. We had to train for that, for one scene, for like a millennia, to shoot something that only lasts 15 seconds [laughs], but that\u2019s the level of dedication that everybody\u2019s putting into this.\u201d<\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Anozie has the added difficulty of pulling off these stunts and sequences while wearing ice blue contacts and clad in the character\u2019s signature suit and tie, which Branagh wanted to make sure looked as smooth and sleek as possible:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted it to be creaseless, he didn\u2019t want it to have any creases on it, so the tie has to be done in a specific way, the shirt has to be done in a specific way. <\/span>Like, There\u2019s so many little things that you probably won\u2019t notice straight away, but because he\u2019s so specific with what he wants \u2014 and I think it all adds to a fun outcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no buttons,\u201d Anozie added, laughing: \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a leotard [which] makes it difficult to go to the toilet.\u201d<\/p>\n
