United Airlines <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/united\/status\/1613142319473070080\">tweeted<\/a> that the issue was with the FAA\u2019s Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system, which sends out real-time flight hazards and restrictions to all commercial pilots, and that it was temporarily delaying all domestic flights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The FAA <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAANews\/status\/1613135903010033665\">said at 6:30 a.m.<\/a> that it was performing its final validation checks and reloading the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agency <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAANews\/status\/1613148579270459393\">then said at 7:19 a.m.<\/a> that it was still working to fully restore the system and ordered airlines to pause all domestic departures until 9 a.m. \u201cto allow the agency to validate the integrity of flight and safety information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FAA also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAANews\/status\/1613162735721746432\">tweeted<\/a> at 8:15 a.m. that it was making progress in restoring the system. It said departures at Newark Liberty International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were resuming as a result of air traffic congestion and reiterated that departures at other airports should resume at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The agency <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAANews\/status\/1613171400801394688\">said at 8:50 a.m.<\/a> that the ground stop was lifted and normal air traffic operations were gradually resuming across the country. It said it will continue to look into the cause of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>All commercial and military flights are required to use the system.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said operations across the National Airspace System were impacted.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Information from NOTAM can be as long as 200 pages and mention runway closures, bird hazards and construction obstacles, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/us-faa-says-flight-personnel-alert-system-not-processing-updates-after-outage-2023-01-11\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=011123\">according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The flight-tracking website FlightAware <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/\">reported<\/a> that more than 4,000 flights within, into or out of the United States were delayed as of just past 9 a.m. More than 700 flights had been canceled.<\/p>\n<p>More than 21,000 flights were booked to depart airports in the U.S. on Wednesday, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecretaryPete\/status\/1613144107995791362\">tweeted<\/a> that he had been in touch with the FAA regarding the glitch. He <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecretaryPete\/status\/1613172396571201536\">later said<\/a> that the NOTAM system had been fully restored.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden said he had spoken to Buttigieg about the situation with the FAA but that the cause of the issue was unknown. He said flights could still land safely but not take off while the system was dealing with the issue.<\/p>\n<p>He also said he told Buttigieg to report directly to him when the cause of the outage was discovered. He said the FAA would have a \u201cgood sense\u201d of the cause in a couple hours.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PressSec\/status\/1613153561289932800\">tweeted<\/a> that there was no evidence of a cyberattack being responsible for the technical issue at that point, but Biden has directed the Transportation Department to conduct an investigation into the cause.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the delays on Wednesday have been for flights on the East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>CNN <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/faa-computer-outage-flights-grounded\/index.html\">noted<\/a> that some airlines might be able to operate without information from NOTAM.<\/p>\n<p>Geoff Freeman, the president and CEO of the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a> Association, which advocates for the various components of the travel industry, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ustravel.org\/press\/us-travel-faa-system-failure-must-spur-federal-action\">said in a statement<\/a> that the FAA\u2019s \u201ccatastrophic\u201d system failure is a \u201cclear sign\u201d that the country\u2019s transportation network needs major upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans deserve an end-to-end travel experience that is seamless and secure,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd our nation\u2019s economy depends on a best-in-class air travel system. We call on federal policymakers to modernize our vital air travel infrastructure to ensure our systems are able to meet demand safely and efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/us-flights-grounded-faa-outage-rcna65243\">reported<\/a> that several airports outside the United States, including Gatwick Airport in London and Frankfurt Airport in Germany, were able to continue their operations without interruption.<\/p>\n<p>Stock prices for U.S. airlines also fell Wednesday during premarket trading, according to Reuters. Southwest Airlines fell 2.4 percent, while Delta, United and American dropped about 1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The stock prices for several of these airlines rose upon the start of trading.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA computer outage comes a couple weeks after issues with Southwest\u2019s scheduling system forced the airline to cancel thousands of flights ahead of New Year\u2019s weekend, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The cancellations led to federal scrutiny, with the Transportation Department pledging to look into the situation and calling the rate of cancellations \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Associated Press contributed to this developing report.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
