Graphene could change that&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div id=\"article-main-content\">\n                            <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concrete has been described as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2019\/feb\/25\/concrete-the-most-destructive-material-on-earth\">the most destructive material on Earth<\/a>. After water, it\u2019s the most used substance in the world, with twice the usage of steel, wood, plastics, and aluminium <em>combined<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To manufacture all this concrete, more than 4 billion tonnes of cement are produced every year. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chathamhouse.org\/2018\/06\/making-concrete-change-innovation-low-carbon-cement-and-concrete\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Chatham House think tank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that creates around 8% of all CO2 emissions \u2014 more than what\u2019s caused by <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/cement-produces-more-pollution-than-all-the-trucks-in-the-world-1.1277216\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all the trucks across the globe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cement makers urgently need to reduce this footprint. To<span> meet the requirements of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the industry needs to cut emissions by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/energy-technology-perspectives-2017\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 16%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by 2030. Small quantities of the liquid formulation are added <span>during the concrete mixing process.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The graphene provides<span> both mechanical support and an active surface for the chemical reactions that occur during the cement hydration and hardening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVery low dosages of the material, in some cases less than 0.01%, are required to deliver substantial performance gains,\u201d <span class=\"il\"> Alex McDermott, the co-founder of Concretene, tells TNW.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis means that Concretene is commercially viable with wholesale costs to be in-line with existing additives already used in the concrete industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Timelapse of graphene concrete pour at Mayfield Depot\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/1xVC3d-Hmj4\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"il\">According to McDermott,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concretene used in real construction projects was up to 30-50% stronger than standard concrete. Further trials followed at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/roller-disco-vs-climate-change--how-graphene-is-transforming-the-construction-industry\/\">a roller disco<\/a> and a<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/nationwide-engineering-group_concretene-pour-netherhampton-farm-activity-6842026506697474048-jf5p\/\"> residential development<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, more than 1,000 tonnes of Concretene have now been poured in real-world projects. The next target is pushing the product into the mainstream.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CdIRytuMxbf\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Graphene has been challenging to produce at speed and scale, but recent breakthroughs have made mass-production a more realistic prospect.<\/p>\n<p>These developments have restored faith from investors. In December, Concretene raised \u00a38m from a VC funding round led by LocalGlobe. The cash will be used to accelerate the commercialization plans.<\/p>\n<p>Concretene will now turn to collaborations with <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heathrow Airport, Network Rail, Yorkshire Water, and the Environment Agency. Work will also soon begin on the first road trial of Concretene with National Highways<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"il\">\u201cConcretene<\/span><span> is being put through \u2018live\u2019 trials in the places where it can be used most,\u201d says McDermott. \u201cThis is a key step to achieving industry adoption.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That could be good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> for both the construction sector and the environment.
