{"id":53934,"date":"2020-08-26T04:46:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T01:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/rnc-2020-ex-democratic-mayor-says-mining-town-lost-hope-until-trump\/"},"modified":"2020-08-26T04:46:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T01:46:00","slug":"rnc-2020-ex-democratic-mayor-says-mining-town-lost-hope-until-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/rnc-2020-ex-democratic-mayor-says-mining-town-lost-hope-until-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"#RNC 2020: Ex-Democratic mayor says mining town \u2018lost hope\u2019 until Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#RNC 2020: Ex-Democratic mayor says mining town \u2018lost hope\u2019 until Trump<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        August 25, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 9:46pm               <span>|<\/span> Updated <span>August 25, 2020 | 9:47pm<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                <span><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-TNL7Y8Yze0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent\" title=\"Video\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n                        Bob Vlaisavljevich, the formerly Democratic mayor of a small Minnesota mining town, touted President Trump as a defender of his constituents and Americans like them in remarks Tuesday night at the 2020 Republican National Convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father and grandfather earned their livings mining the raw materials that made the steel that built America,\u201d he said. \u201cThis election is a make-or-break for workers who are carrying on the legacy of men like them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vlaisavljevich said that Democrats who historically fought for working men and women can no longer be relied upon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the Iron Range economy is vulnerable to economic trends and to foreign trade, we always needed a strong voice in Washington,\u201d he said. \u201cWe looked to Democrats to fill that void for many years because we actually thought they cared about our welfare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore. \u2026 This is hard for me to say because I am a lifelong Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>Vlaisavljevich in 2018 told The New York Times that he had changed his registration to Republican.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16191272\"><img alt=\"Bob Vlaisavljevich\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Mayor Bob Vlaisavljevich of Eveleth, Minn.\u00a0<\/span><span>via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Vlaisavljevich watched the population of Eveleth, Minn., which he now serves as mayor, dwindle over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost thousands of jobs,\u201d he said. \u201cWe lost a generation of young people who had to leave the Iron Range to find a livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorst of all, we lost hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That all changed, Vlaisavljevich said, with the election of Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA straight-talking New Yorker burst onto the scene, promising to stand up to China and the rest of the world on behalf of the American worker,\u201d he said. \u201cFour years later, the Iron Range is roaring back to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump accomplished that through tariffs on foreign steel, helping to prop up an American industry flagging since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the fight is not over,\u201d said Vlaisavljevich. Democratic nominee \u201cJoe Biden has allowed radicals like AOC [New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] to craft his environmental policies.
