China has rolled out its central bank digital currency\u00a0(CBDC) to several cities and made it available for use at the Winter Olympics. <\/p>\n<p>Many other central banks, including the Bank of England, are considering how to roll out a CBDC, while Nigeria\u2019s CBDC has had poor uptake so far.\u00a0India has already\u00a0launched a pilot scheme,\u00a0while Mexico has confirmed the launch of a digital peso.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tony Yates, former senior adviser to the Bank of England, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/44015dbd-e28a-4be9-b690-ff309b80b890\">advises<\/a> against CBDCs in a recently published opinion piece for the Financial Times. According to Yates, \u201cThe huge undertaking of digital currencies is not worth the costs and risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CBDCs are already in place in most countries as most countries already have digital versions of cash, coins and notes. Yates, therefore, questions the motivations behind global rollouts of CBDCs, calling them \u201csuspect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CBDCs could be a way of quashing crypto, including decentralized currencies such as Bitcoin (BTC). However, \u201cCryptocurrencies are such bad candidates for money,\u201d he explains, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have money supplies managed by humans to generate steady paths for inflation and are hugely expensive and time consuming to use in transactions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yates\u2019 take on Bitcoin is unsurprising. He has tweeted several times about Bitcoin,\u00a0claiming that most of Bitcoin\u2019s use is \u201cillicit\u201d and \u201cspeculative.\u201d <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I would guess that most of the use is 1) illicit, and not discouraged by central bank provision and 2) speculative;  if CBDC were to cause a large price drop, this could wipe out and discourage a lot of users.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tony Yates (@t0nyyates) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/t0nyyates\/status\/1383449964420861970?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Since Bitcoin use a public ledger available for everyone, its use for illicit purposes has decreased steadily over the years to less than 1% of total transactions, reports show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, the layer-2 Lightning Network allows instant remittance payments, while other cryptocurrencies and even stablecoins continue to grow in use cases and development. <\/p>\n<p>For Yates, introducing CBDCs is akin to \u201cmaking central bank reserves more widely available than just to counterparties.\u201d But in a world where the reserve currency is the U.S. dollar, the competition for a new global CBDC is counterproductive. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Tanzania \u2018cautious\u2019 on CBDC adoption after initial research<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Financial Times opinion piece summarizes that the most compelling arguments for CBDCs are around payments and settlement efficiency, but the debate is \u201cmysterious.\u201d Yates explains that it would be a colossal undertaking for the central bank to employ the staff to build and manage the hardware and software of a new payment system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"law_decoded\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
