\n Some losses sting more than others for Serena Williams.<\/p>\n

Following Tuesday\u2019s shocking defeat to Greece\u2019s Maria Sakkari\u2013 the 13th seed\u2013 at the Western & Southern Open in New York, 38-year-old Williams compared the loss to a toxic romance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put myself in a bad situation,\u201d the third-seeded Williams told reporters.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s like dating a guy that you know sucks. That\u2019s literally what I keep doing out here. It\u2019s like I have to get rid of this guy. It just makes no sense. It\u2019s frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams, who has been happ<\/a>ily married to Reddit<\/a> co-founder Alexis Ohanian since 2017, fell to 25-year-old Sakkari in the third set, 6-1.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to play the way I have been playing and to stay positive,\u201d Williams said. \u201cAnd to play nine hours in a week is too much. I don\u2019t usually play like that. It\u2019s all new for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Williams is coping with the latest loss, she\u2019s also gearing up for this year\u2019s fanless US Open amid the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no excuse,\u201d Williams said. \u201cYeah, it was hard, but I had so many opportunities to win, and I have to figure that one out, like how to start winning those matches again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Western & Southern Open is serving as a US Open tune-up in Flushing after it was moved from Cincinnati. The US Open gets underway on Monday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
