However, there are a few other ways to grab Chrome or Firefox on a fresh PC.<\/p>\n<p>In the old days, obtaining a web browser usually meant picking up a CD or floppy disk, or waiting for a slow download over FTP networks. Windows eventually shipped with Internet Explorer by default, and later Microsoft Edge, which meant downloading another web browser was just a few clicks away. In the modern era, Edge and its default search engine (Bing) try to stop you from switching away with warnings when you search \u201cgoogle chrome\u201d or another related term, which is pretty funny.<\/p>\n<p>Even though using Edge to download another browser on your Windows PC is still the easiest method, there are a few other way to grab Chrome, Firefox, or another browser of your choice.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Microsoft_Store\"><\/span>The Microsoft Store<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The built-in app store for Windows 10 and 11, the Microsoft Store, used to lock out more advanced applications like web browsers. The rules are more loose these days, and as a result, Mozilla Firefox became the first major web browser on the Microsoft Store\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/767493\/you-can-get-firefox-from-the-microsoft-store-now\/\">back in November 2021.<\/p>\n<p>As of January 2022, you can download <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2FproductId%2F9NZVDKPMR9RD&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Mozilla Firefox<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2FXP8CF6S8G2D5T6&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Opera<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2FXPDBZ4MPRKNN30&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Opera GX<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2FXP8C9QZMS2PC1T&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Brave Browser<\/a>, and a few less-popular alternatives from the Microsoft Store. In this scenario, where we\u2019re trying not to use a web browser, you can make sure you open the right listings by using the Windows Run dialog and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Flearn.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fwindows%2Fuwp%2Flaunch-resume%2Flaunch-store-app&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Store URI scheme<\/a>. For example, here\u2019s the store URL for Firefox:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/store\/productId\/<strong>9NZVDKPMR9RD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See that string at the end after \u201cproductId\u201d? Open the Run dialog (Win + R), then type this URL:<\/p>\n<p>ms-windows-store:\/\/pdp\/?ProductId=<strong>9NZVDKPMR9RD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Click OK, and the Microsoft Store will open to that specific listing. You can replace the part after \u201cProductId=\u201d with the ID of anything else on the Microsoft Store.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PowerShell_Scripting\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">PowerShell Scripting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One method of directly downloading files from the web without a web browser is with PowerShell, one of the command-line environments in Windows. The easiest method is to use the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Flearn.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fpowershell%2Fmodule%2Fmicrosoft.powershell.utility%2Finvoke-webrequest&amp;___trxnet=ls\">Invoke-WebRequest command<\/a>, which works as far back as PowerShell 3.0, which was bundled with Windows 8 \u2014 making the command available on every modern version of Windows.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2350px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-864200\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-1-1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"PowerShell image\" width=\"2350\" height=\"956\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Downloading Chrome with PowerShell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To get started, search for PowerShell in the Start Menu and open it. There are also many other ways to open PowerShell. You should see a prompt that starts in your main user folder. Start by typing \u201ccd Desktop\u201d (without the quotes) and press Enter. That way, the downloaded files will be saved to your Desktop for easy access.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, grab the download link for your browser of choice from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"#links\">the bottom of this article<\/a>, and put it inside the Invoke-WebRequest command like this:<\/p>\n<pre>Invoke-WebRequest http:\/\/yourlinkgoeshere.com -o download.exe<\/pre>\n<p>PowerShell should display a progress popup, and then close it when the download is complete. You can then try opening the \u201cdownload.exe\u201d file that has been created on the desktop.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Curl_Command\"><\/span>Curl Command<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can also directly download files from the internet on Windows using <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/447033\/how-to-use-curl-to-download-files-from-the-linux-command-line\/\">Curl, a cross-platform tool for making web requests and downloading files. Curl is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/864162|xid:{xid}&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fdevblogs.microsoft.com%2Fcommandline%2Ftar-and-curl-come-to-windows%2F&amp;___trxnet=ls\">preinstalled<\/a> on Windows 10 version 1803 or later (the April 2018 Update).<\/p>\n<p>First, search for PowerShell in the Start Menu and open it, or open it from the Run dialog by pressing Win + R and typing \u201cpowershell\u201d (without the quotes). First, set the directory to your Desktop folder, so you can easily find the file when it\u2019s downloaded. Run the below command and press the Enter key when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<pre>cd Desktop<\/pre>\n<p>Next, get the download URL for your browser from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"#links\">the bottom of this article<\/a>, and put it inside the curl command like the below example. Note that the URL needs to go inside quotes.<\/p>\n<pre>curl -L \"http:\/\/yourlinkgoeshere.com\" -o download.exe<\/pre>\n<p>That command tells Curl to download the specified URL, follow any HTTP redirects (the -L flag), and then save the file as \u201cdownload.exe\u201d in the folder.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chocolatey\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Chocolatey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another way to install software on Windows without a web browser is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chocolatey.org\/\">Chocolatey<\/a>, a third-party package manager that works a bit like APT on some Linux distributions. It allows you install, update, and remove applications \u2014 including web browsers \u2014 all with terminal commands.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1838px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-864789\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-2.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"PowerShell image of Chocolatey running\" width=\"1838\" height=\"1020\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Installing Google Chrome with Chocolatey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>First, search for PowerShell in the Start Menu and open it as an Administrator. Then run the below command to allow executable scripts like Chocolatey to run, and press Y when prompted:<\/p>\n<pre>Set-ExecutionPolicy AllSigned<\/pre>\n<p>Next, you need to install Chocolatey. The below command is supposed to be copied and pasted into the PowerShell, but we\u2019re working from the assumption that you aren\u2019t using a web browser on the Windows PC, so have fun typing in all that:<\/p>\n<pre>Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process -Force; [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol -bor 3072; iex ((New-Object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadString('https:\/\/community.chocolatey.org\/install.ps1'))<\/pre>\n<p>When it\u2019s done, you\u2019ll be able to install web browsers with simple commands, as well as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/community.chocolatey.org\/packages\">anything else in the Chocolatey repositories<\/a>. Below are the commands for installing popular web browsers. Keep in mind that anytime you want to run Chocolatey, you have to open a PowerShell window as Administrator.<\/p>\n<pre>choco install googlechrome&#13;\nchoco install firefox&#13;\nchoco install opera&#13;\nchoco install brave&#13;\nchoco install vivaldi<\/pre>\n<p>Chocolatey packages are designed to be updated through Chocolatey (for example, by running \u201cchoco upgrade googlechrome\u201d), but web browsers already update themselves.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"HTML_Help_Program\"><\/span>HTML Help Program<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You may have seen the Windows Help Viewer before, which some applications (mostly older software) use to display help files and documentation. The Help Viewer was designed to render HTML files, including ones loaded from the web. Even though that <em>technically<\/em> makes it a web browser, it\u2019s ridiculous enough that we had to throw it in here.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, open the Run dialog (Win + R), then run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>hh https:\/\/google.com<\/pre>\n<p>That command opens the Help Viewer with the Google search page. However, as you use it, you may notice that most pages barely work or render as completely broken. That\u2019s because the Help Viewer uses the rendering engine from Internet Explorer 7. However, if you can get to a working page, it is capable of downloading files. For example, you can download Firefox from Mozilla\u2019s archival website:<\/p>\n<pre>hh\u00a0http:\/\/ftp.mozilla.org\/pub\/firefox\/releases<\/pre>\n<p>You shouldn\u2019t really use this method, not just because it\u2019s wildly impractical \u2014 downloading executable files through an insecure HTTP connection makes you vulnerable to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/668989\/what-is-a-man-in-the-middle-attack\/\">man-in-the-middle attacks. Trying it out on your own home network should be fine, but never do this on public Wi-Fi or any other networks you don\u2019t fully trust.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"links\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Browser_Download_Links\"><\/span>Browser Download Links<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here are the URLs for the latest available versions of popular browsers on Windows, which can be used with any of the URL-based download methods mentioned above.
