Ron DeSantis (R) is facing criticism after his administration\u00a0rejected\u00a0an Advanced Placement African American Studies course from being taught in Florida schools, the latest curriculum-related action by the governor to draw fierce backlash.<\/p>\n<p>The DeSantis administration made the move earlier this month, when it sent a letter to the College Board Florida Partnership arguing that \u201cthe content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value.\u201d The letter didn\u2019t name which law the course purportedly violated, and the state\u2019s Department of Education did not clarify that matter when asked by The Hill.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The action has drawn heavy criticism, with Democratic legislators and LGBTQ advocates likening it to DeSantis\u2019s recent crusade against Florida schools teaching lessons related to sexual orientation or gender identity \u2014 topics state officials have argued are in<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate for children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida is doing its best to tilt the scales and shut down important, much-needed discussions of race, slavery, stolen lands, and undeniable history that have led to where we are as a society today,\u201d Florida Sen. Shevrin Jones (D), the state\u2019s first openly gay senator, said Thursday in a statement. \u201cGov. DeSantis\u2019 whitewashing of history and book bans are his latest assault on American history and our First Amendment rights. Horrifyingly, it is our vulnerable and underrepresented students who will suffer the most as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A February 2022\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3836\">Quinnipiac University p<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3836\">oll\u00a0found that<\/a> only 27 percent of Americans felt the U.S. history taught in schools reflects an accurate account of the role of African Americans in the country. The new Advanced Placement course, which is currently a pilot program in 60 schools nationwide, had been in the works for over a decade, according to the College Board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ivory Toldson, the NAACP Director of Education Innovation and Research, condemned Florida\u2019s rejection of the course.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRon DeSantis\u2019 flippant dismissal of an AP African American Studies course is not only a dereliction of his duty to ensure equitable education for all Floridians, but shows clear disdain for the lives and experiences that form part of our national history,\u201d Toldson said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/naacp.org\/articles\/naacp-condemns-gov-desantis-decision-reject-ap-course-african-american-studies\">statement on Friday.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-afc3c001-7fff-1388-be7f-112bc479642e\">\u201cDismissing this important subject as lacking \u201ceducational value\u201d defies centuries of evidence to the contrary. African American history is American history, and failure to comprehend this very simple fact is un-American in and of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But Florida\u2019s rejection of the course follows a pattern from last year, when DeSantis signed the Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act into law. The law, known as the Stop WOKE Act, prohibits any instruction that could make someone feel \u201cpersonal responsibility\u201d for historic wrongdoings because of their race, sex or national origin.<\/p>\n<p>In unveiling the legislative proposal last year, DeSantis\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/12\/15\/governor-desantis-announces-legislative-proposal-to-stop-w-o-k-e-activism-and-critical-race-theory-in-schools-and-corporations\/\">said<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/12\/15\/governor-desantis-announces-legislative-proposal-to-stop-w-o-k-e-activism-and-critical-race-theory-in-schools-and-corporations\/\">\u00a0the measure was drafted<\/a> with the intent of \u201ctaking a stand against the state-sanctioned racism that is critical race theory\u201d \u2014 an academic theory that addresses systemic racism in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>But scholars have argued that concepts related to critical race theory are not taught until students reach the college level.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cRemember when we were told they weren\u2019t opposing the teaching of Black history, just \u2018CRT\u2019? And how many dismissed those of us who said these laws were anti-history laws, and anti-Black? Perhaps one day folks will listen to those who know,\u201d\u00a0Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of The New York Times\u2019s 1619 Project, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nhannahjones\/status\/1616203367935578117?s=20&amp;t=T3iY1o3VKseGAWiTP5Dfbw\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hannah-Jones\u2019s program, which puts the repercussions of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the forefront of the national narrative, has been banned in Florida classrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur history has long been treated as illegitimate,\u201d Hannah-Jones said. \u201cIt has always been contested.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s office did not im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely respond to The Hill\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The governor, who is seen as a top GOP contender for the 2024 presidential election, was sworn in for his second term on Jan. 3. During his inauguration speech, he highlighted the educational reforms his administration passed in his first term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida is No. 1 in education freedom and we rank No. 1 in parental involvement in education,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2023\/01\/03\/governor-desantis-delivers-inaugural-address-sets-priorities-for-second-term\/\">DeSantis said<\/a>. \u201cWe must ensure school systems are responsive to parents and to students, not partisan interest groups, and we must ensure that our institutions of higher learning are focused on academic excellence and the pursuit of truth, not the imposition of trendy ideology.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFlorida must always be a great place to raise a family \u2013 we will enact more family-friendly policies to make it easier to raise children and we will defend our children against those who seek to rob them of their innocence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Jones, the Florida state senator, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShevrinJones\/status\/1616466100522479618\">tweete<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShevrinJones\/status\/1616466100522479618\">d\u00a0on Friday that Florida<\/a> had become a state where you \u201cDon\u2019t Say Black\u201d \u2014 a reference to a new Florida education law known to its critics as the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d law for its heavy restrictions on how LGBTQ issues and identities can be addressed in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>New York Rep. Ritchie Torres (D) \u2014 currently the member of Congress who is both Black and openly gay  \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RitchieTorres\/status\/1616124738752987152\">similarly\u00a0tw<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RitchieTorres\/status\/1616124738752987152\">eeted<\/a>: \u201cFlorida has gone from Don\u2019t Say Gay to Don\u2019t Say Black.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Officially titled the \u201cParental Rights in Education\u201d law, the measure, which\u00a0went into effect in July, prohibits public primary school teachers from engaging in classroom instruction related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Educators through high school are barred from addressing either subject in a manner that is not \u201cage-appropriate or developmentally appropriate\u201d for their students, though neither term has been given a concrete definition.<\/p>\n<p>Florida teachers who violate the law risk having their licenses suspended or revoked\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/core\/fileparse.php\/20394\/urlt\/7-2.pdf\">under a rule<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/core\/fileparse.php\/20394\/urlt\/7-2.pdf\">\u00a0adopted by<\/a> the state Board of Education in October.<\/p>\n<p>But restrictive curriculum laws \u2014 particularly ones pertaining to LGBTQ subjects \u2014 are mostly unpopular among the American public.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In March, an\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/10-americans-oppose-laws-prohibiting-lgbtq-lessons-elementary\/story?id=83393478\">ABC News-Ipsos p<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/10-americans-oppose-laws-prohibiting-lgbtq-lessons-elementary\/story?id=83393478\">oll\u00a0found that<\/a> more than 60 percent of adults oppose legislation seeking to bar elementary school teachers from addressing sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Americans are more split on whether such lessons should be taught through high school, however, and a May\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2022\/05\/23\/lgbtq-classroom-politics\/#:~:text=41%25%20of%20American%20parents%20support,%2C%20while%2044%25%20are%20opposed.\">Morning Consult surv<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2022\/05\/23\/lgbtq-classroom-politics\/#:~:text=41%25%20of%20American%20parents%20support,%2C%20while%2044%25%20are%20opposed.\">ey\u00a0found that<\/a> while 41 percent of American parents support teaching or discussing sexual orientation and gender identity in K-12 classrooms, 44 percent are opposed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
