Math can measure the frames per second in a young Steven Spielberg\u2019s camera, but it can\u2019t inspire the budding filmmaker at the center of <em>The Fabelmans<\/em>. Math can tell us exactly when Maverick reaches Mach 10 in <em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>, but not when he achieves inner peace over past demons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And so it is with the Oscars. Every year I publish mathematical Oscar predictions, starting with the nominee predictions found in this article, using all of this year\u2019s awards season data and historical trends to calculate the probability that each contender hears their name called. Sometimes, my model\u2019s favorites do well, like last year\u2019s Academy Awards when 19 out of 20 frontrunners went on to win their races. Sometimes, there are plenty of upsets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But math can only tell us who is most likely to win, not <em>why<\/em> those films deserve the recognition they receive. That\u2019s a beautiful thing \u2013 it allows us to debate and debate and debate who the rightful winners are. But first, let\u2019s use statistics to get a sneak peek at who those winners might be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Picture<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:720px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((1008\/720)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Picture-Nominations.png?w=720\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"1008\" width=\"720\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Five films are virtual locks to hear their names called for the top category: <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>, <em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>, <em>T\u00e1r<\/em>, <em>The Fabelmans<\/em>, and <em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>. These nominee predictions essentially double as early Oscar predictions, so <em>Everything Everywhere<\/em> has the current lead, but there\u2019s plenty of time for that to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Elvis<\/em> and <em>Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em> are looking pretty good to round out the top seven, though certainly not guaranteed. From there, the picture gets murkier. The math sees seven chief contenders for those last three spots \u2013 <em>Women Talking<\/em>, <em>Babylon<\/em>, <em>Glass Onion<\/em>, <em>The Whale<\/em>, <em>All Quiet on the Western Front<\/em>, <em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em>, and <em>RRR<\/em>. But some of those percentages are so low that it\u2019s entirely possible a film even lower than this list sneaks its way onto the top ten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Director<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-full alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:709px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((812\/709)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Director-Nominations.png?w=709\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"812\" width=\"709\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The Daniels, the joint name for <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em> directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, could become the third joint winners of this prestigious category. Only Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise (<em>West Side Story<\/em>) and the Coen brothers (<em>No Country for Old Men<\/em>) have previously teamed up to claim this honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Not so fast, says Todd Field (<em>T\u00e1r<\/em>), Steven Spielberg (<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>), and Martin McDonagh (<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>). After them, there\u2019s a big gap: no other contender has even a one-third chance of getting nominated, so the model is basically giving us the shrug emoji as its prediction for the last spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Actor<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:720px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((576\/720)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Actor-Nominations.png?w=720\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"576\" width=\"720\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Best actor is a terrific three-way race. We\u2019ve got Golden Globe winners Colin Farrell (<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>) and Austin Butler (<em>Elvis<\/em>), and Critics Choice champion Brendan Fraser (<em>The Whale<\/em>). All three checked the nomination boxes from the Screen Actors Guild, the BAFTAs, and plenty of critic groups along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Bill Nighy (<em>Living<\/em>) and Paul Mescal (<em>Aftersun<\/em>) are the model\u2019s somewhat-confident choices for the last two seats at the table, but don\u2019t rule out Jeremy Pope (<em>The Inspection<\/em>), Tom Cruise (<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>), or Adam Sandler (<em>Hustle<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Actress<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:720px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((504\/720)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Actress-Nominations.png?w=720\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"504\" width=\"720\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Katharine Hepburn. Ingrid Bergman. Walter Brennan. Daniel Day-Lewis. Frances McDormand. Jack Nicholson. Meryl Streep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    That\u2019s it \u2013 the entire list of people with three acting Oscars. But these seven giants of their craft might be about to welcome an eighth member to their club, as Cate Blanchett is out in front for Best Actress for her role in <em>T\u00e1r<\/em>. At the very least, she has a 99.6 percent chance to get nominated. But close on her heels is Michelle Yeoh (<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>), followed by Danielle Deadwyler (<em>Till<\/em>) and Viola Davis (<em>The Woman King<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The last spot is up for grabs, with Michelle Williams (<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>) and Ana de Armas (<em>Blonde<\/em>) as the top two, according to the math.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Supporting Actor<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:720px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((648\/720)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Supporting-Actor-Nominations.png?w=720\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"648\" width=\"720\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Ke Huy Quan (<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>) is off to a fantastic start this awards season. I\u2019d hit my word count and have to cut the last three categories from this article if I listed every award he\u2019s won thus far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But when it comes time for his Oscar campaign, he might have to duke it out with a pair of actors from <em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>: Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. Fans of that film might risk splitting their vote, further helping Ke Huy Quan\u2019s odds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Supporting Actress<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:720px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((648\/720)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Supporting-Actress-Nominations.png?w=720\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"648\" width=\"720\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In a strange bit of Oscars history, no actor from a Marvel film has been nominated for an Academy Award. Well, there\u2019s a 98.4 percent chance that Angela Bassett (<em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em>) will be changing that on Tuesday morning. What\u2019s more, her film\u2019s predecessor remains the only Marvel movie to win an Oscar, and Bassett will represent one of the sequel\u2019s top chances to match that feat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But don\u2019t rule out Kerry Condon, who is in a strong position to be one of four actors from <em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em> to be nominated. Also cracking the top five according to the data are Hong Chau from <em>The Whale<\/em> and both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu from <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Best Original Screenplay<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-full alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:720px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((432\/720)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Original-Screenplay-Nominations.png?w=720\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"432\" width=\"720\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Of the eight categories covered in this article, <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em> leads in half of them, including best original screenplay. That said, you could make a strong case for any of the top four films being in the lead here. <em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em> won the Golden Globe Award, while <em>T\u00e1r<\/em> and <em>The Fabelmans<\/em> have racked up just about all of the relevant nominations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After that, it gets tricky. Normally, the Writers Guild of America plays a big role in pointing the way here, but this year, they changed their calendar so that their nominations won\u2019t be released until after the Oscar nominations come out.
