The team that brought us the horror hit\u00a0Host<\/em><\/strong> is back at it with a great new idea. Host<\/em> writer-director Rob Savage<\/strong> and writer-producer Jed\u00a0Shepherd<\/strong> are teaming with\u00a0Studiocanal for a horror movie that\u2019s a cross between a prison break flick and a haunted house movie. The story follows a group of female prisoners who stage a jailbreak, only to find themselves facing off against a \u201cdark presence.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of Rob Savage. I first became aware of the filmmaker with his excellent short\u00a0Dawn of the Deaf<\/em> (watch it here), and \u2013 like seemingly everyone else right now \u2013 I really enjoyed his recent film\u00a0Host<\/em>, a horror movie shot over Zoom that\u2019s been getting a ton of well-deserved buzz. (We even did a real Zoom seance with Savage and the cast, which you can watch here.) Now, Savage and his\u00a0Host<\/em> co-writer\/producer Jed Shepherd have something new lined up, and it sounds promising.<\/p>\n

Per Deadline, the project is described as \u201cThe Conjuring<\/em> behind bars,\u201d and it sounds like a little bit of\u00a0The Descent<\/em> has been thrown in for good measure. Savage told the publication that the movie is a \u201cmelding of the prison escape movie and the haunted house movie, in which a group of women who stage an unsuccessful breakout attempt discover a secret room that unleashes a dark presence that marauds the halls at night. The film will have a claustrophobic quality akin to The Descent<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teresa Sutherland<\/strong> will write the film, and while they haven\u2019t decided yet if it\u2019ll be set in the US or UK, the story involves British folklore. Savage also added: \u201cNone of the characters are conventional good guys.\u00a0 So, there are opportunities for interesting casting choices with actors playing against type.\u201d The filmmaker also said that this movie will not be \u201ca conventional sequel to\u00a0Host<\/em>,\u201d but \u201cmore of a follow-up film.\u201d Savage continued: \u201cIf\u00a0Host<\/em>\u00a0was about the horror of lockdown, this is about the fear of going back outside, of the world reopening. It won\u2019t have a conventional development process so we\u2019re putting the gas on it now and we\u2019re in talks with various industry partners about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Host<\/em>, I\u2019m all-in on whatever Savage wants to do next, but it helps that this concept sounds pretty damn great. There\u2019s a lot of potential here, and there\u2019s a way to make this sort of scenario seem both familiar and fresh at the same time. I\u2019m excited to see how it all turns out.
