As it happens, this year\u2019s Super Bowl will air on the Fox broadcast network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe weren\u2019t sure if anyone would notice. And we definitely didn\u2019t think it would break the internet,\u201d the candy brand wrote in a press release. \u201cBut now we get it \u2014 even a candy\u2019s shoes can be polarizing. Which was the last thing M&amp;M\u2019s wanted since we\u2019re all about bringing people together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Of course, the entire bit is a set-up for a Super Bowl ad, which will air in the 1st quarter of the game, and which will star Rudolph. Whether the brand leans into the culture wars, or pursues a different strategy remains to be seen. As for the future of the spokescandies, keep in mind that Mr. Peanut\u2019s untimely death ahead of Planters\u2019 Super Bowl ad in 2020 was short-lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But fictional talking candies aren\u2019t the only ad that could garner the internet\u2019s attention this year. For a day so closely tied to indulgence (alcoholic beverages, lots and lots of unhealthy food), a number of campaigns appear set to lean into restraint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Hence Paul Rudd\u2019s <em>Ant-Man<\/em> chugging on a non-alcoholic Heineken before saving the world (a joint campaign between Disney and the Dutch beer giant) or Pepsi promoting its sugar-free soda in the beginning of a major new campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Frito-Lay, which produces a good percentage of the products in your supermarket snack aisle, is leaning into one of its healthiest options: PopCorners, the popcorn-based chip. The company has hired Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul to reprise their <em>Breaking Bad<\/em> characters of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman for the spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Even a mayonnaise company is going to lean into environmentalism, with Hellmann\u2019s debuting a new installment of its \u201cMake Taste, Not Waste\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Of course, it\u2019s still the Super Bowl, so this year\u2019s game will still have plenty of familiar faces and brands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    So far Kevin Bacon is committed to a Budweiser ad, while Serena Williams and Brian Cox are starring in a  <em>Caddyshack<\/em> parody for Michelob Ultra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    With the Big Game still 3 weeks away, there\u2019s plenty of room for more surprises. And if brand\u2019s want to drum up some hype, perhaps stoking the outrage machine could be just the ticket. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After all, no one was talking about the shoes that cartoon M&amp;Ms wear, until Carlson dedicated an entire segment to the topic.
