Awards<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Female directors were once again shut out in the female director category at the Academy Awards after two years of seeing progress in the space, with women winning the prestigious award in back-to-back years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The nominees this year are Martin McDonagh (<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (<em>Everything Everywhere All At Once<\/em>), Steven Spielberg (<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>), Todd Field (<em>Tar<\/em>) and Ruben \u00d6stlund (<em>Triangle of Sadness<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    That means there were no women nominated despite a buzzy awards year for female filmmakers, like <em>The Woman King<\/em>\u2018s Gina Prince-Bythewood and <em>Women Talking<\/em>\u2018s Sarah Polley, or <em>Till<\/em>\u2018s Chinonye Chukwu, <em>She Said<\/em>\u2018s Maria Schrader and <em>Aftersun<\/em>\u2018s Charlotte Wells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Last year, Jane Campion became the first woman to receive multiple Oscar nominations for best director, having previously been recognized for 1993\u2019s Cannes Palme d\u2019Or winner\u00a0<em>The Piano.\u00a0<\/em>She became the third woman in history to win the best director award last year for <em>The Power of the Dog<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Only seven women have been nominated for directing in the Oscar\u2019s history: Kathryn Bigelow for <em>The Hurt Locker<\/em>, Lina Wertm\u00fcller for <em>Seven Beauties<\/em>, Sofia Coppola for <em>Lost in Translation<\/em>, Greta Gerwig for <em>Lady Bird<\/em>, Emerald Fennell for <em>Promising Young Woman<\/em>, Chloe Zhao for <em>Nomadland<\/em> and Campion for <em>The Piano <\/em>and <em>The Power of the Dog<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    2021\u2019s\u00a0Oscars\u00a0were notable as the\u00a0first to see multiple female nominees\u00a0in a single year \u2014 Chlo\u00e9 Zhao for\u00a0<em>Nomadland\u00a0<\/em>and Emerald Fennell for\u00a0<em>Promising Young Woman \u2014\u00a0<\/em>the former becoming only the second female director in the Academy\u2019s history to win the prestigious prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Women rarely get recognized in the directing category, but that doesn\u2019t stop their films from being nominated for best picture. This year, for example, <em>Women Talking <\/em>(by Polley), received a best picture nomination. In history, Randa Haines\u2019\u00a0<em>Children of a Lesser God<\/em>\u00a0was nominated for five awards in 1987, including best picture but not best director. Similarly, Barbra Streisand was snubbed for a directing nomination for\u00a0<em>The Prince of Tides<\/em>\u00a0in 1992, despite its seven other nominations, including best picture. With many more in between, Ava DuVernay was recently snubbed while her 2014 film\u00a0<em>Selma<\/em>\u00a0was nominated for best picture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    However, there were several female directing nominees in other categories this morning. Domee Shi was nominated in the best animated film category for <em>Turning Red<\/em>, as well as Laura Poitras for <em>All the Beauty and the Bloodshed<\/em> and Sara Dosa for <em>Fire of Love<\/em> in the documentary feature category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The Academy comprises 17 branches \u2014 actors, directors, cinematographers, costume designers, editors, etc. \u2014 each of which chooses the nominees for the category or categories relevant to their area of expertise. The entire Academy, however, weighs in on the best picture category. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Since 2009, the Academy has been able to select more than five best picture nominees, but not more than five best director nominees, which might explain some of the picture\/director discrepancies. But it\u2019s hard not to assume that the demographics of the Academy aren\u2019t also a factor. Even after the push in recent years to diversify the 10,509-member organization, it is still 66.5 percent male members \u2014 in the directors branch, it\u2019s 75.6 percent male.
