(AP) \u2014 Illinois&#8217; two-week-old <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-illinois-district-of-columbia-shootings-violence-e8f6523bc0ce295a5cbabfdf000c3399\" data-ylk=\"slk:ban on semiautomatic weapons\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">ban on semiautomatic weapons<\/a> outlaws \u201cubiquitous\u201d firearms in \u201cradical\u201d defiance of the Constitution&#8217;s Second Amendment, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23586160-barnett-et-al-v-raoul-and-kelly\" data-ylk=\"slk:a federal lawsuit filed\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">a federal lawsuit filed<\/a> by the National Rifle Association <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23586160-barnett-et-al-v-raoul-and-kelly\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tuesday\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Tuesday<\/a> claims.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful NRA joined a parade of gun-rights activists seeking to toss out the newly minted prohibition on dozens of rapid-fire pistols and long guns, as well as large-capacity magazines or attachments.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/fulltext.asp?DocName=10200SB2226ham003&amp;GA=102&amp;SessionId=110&amp;DocTypeId=SB&amp;LegID=134879&amp;DocNum=2226&amp;GAID=16&amp;SpecSess=&amp;Session=\" data-ylk=\"slk:signed the law Jan. 10\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">signed the law Jan. 10<\/a> in response to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/highland-park-shooting-kevin-mccarthy-funeral-b00650d235054c31ec583195fa558209\" data-ylk=\"slk:shooting deaths of seven at the Fourth of July parade\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">shooting deaths of seven at the Fourth of July parade<\/a> in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, where 30 were also injured. He has said he believes the law will withstand court challenges about its constitutionality.<\/p>\n<p>Two individual gun owners from Benton, nine miles (about 14 kilometers) northeast of St. Louis, are lead plaintiffs in the NRA lawsuit, the second to be filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. They are joined by two southern Illinois gun dealers and shooting range operators, as well as a Connecticut-based shooting sports trade association.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA pleading notes that the U.S. Supreme Court&#8217;s landmark 2008 Heller decision refuses to let stand any restriction on \u201cweapons that are in common use\u201d today unless \u2014 another ruling last summer found \u2014 there is evidence of an \u201cenduring American tradition\u201d of restriction.<\/p>\n<p>The Illinois law \u201ctakes the radical step of banning nearly every modern semiautomatic rifle \u2014 the single-most popular type of rifle in the country, possessed by Americans in the tens of millions,&#8221; the document says.<\/p>\n<p>The 24 million AR-15 semiautomatic rifles in U.S. circulation far outnumber the 16 million Ford F-150 trucks, the nation&#8217;s top-selling vehicle, according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>A similar <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-illinois-state-government-chicago-springfield-237271798243dae01db16377d9a01033\" data-ylk=\"slk:constitutional challenge was filed last week\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">constitutional challenge was filed last week<\/a> in the Benton-based Southern District. It was filed by gun owners and gun-rights advocacy groups.<\/p>\n<p>Other lawsuits, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-illinois-state-government-chicago-springfield-237271798243dae01db16377d9a01033\" data-ylk=\"slk:filed in southern Illinois county courts\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">filed in southern Illinois county courts<\/a>, challenge the legislative procedure to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rove the law.<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiffs in all the lawsuits are likely seeking southern Illinois courts because of a stronger disposition toward Second Amendment rights. Guns are viewed far more favorably in central and southern Illinois where there are larger populations of hunters and sport shooters, compared to northern metropolitan areas, particularly Chicago, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-united-states-government-2022-midterm-elections-lori-lightfoot-chicago-9004b7343d1524f2014859958389be8b\" data-ylk=\"slk:which continues to battle deadly handgun violence\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">which continues to battle deadly handgun violence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA-backed lawsuit also argues that the law&#8217;s ban on high-capacity ammunition cartridges \u2014 no more than 10 rounds for rifles and 15 for pistols \u2014 and a long list of attachments and other accessories, is just as problematic because the weapons in question can&#8217;t operate without them, so the add-ons are constitutionally protected \u201cfirearms\u201d by inference.<\/p>\n<p>Pritzker and allies nationally refer to the guns as \u201cassault weapons.\u201d The pleading notes the tradition of bearing arms and includes a glossary of terms.
