Joe Manchin on Wednesday moved to delay new tax credits for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/electric-vehicles\" data-ylk=\"slk:electric vehicles\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">electric vehicles<\/a>, a key feature of President Joe Biden&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-signs-climate-health-bill-9a7f349fa7b07387d20ad603f2ff4875\" data-ylk=\"slk:landmark climate law\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">landmark climate law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin said guidelines issued by the Treasury Department allow manufacturers in Europe and other countries to bypass requirements that significant portions of EV batteries be produced in North America.<\/p>\n<p>The climate law, officially known as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-biden-health-seniors-medicare-9c2b70dc2f2d7291acc4292799ff342c\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Inflation Reduction Act\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">the Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>, \u201cis first and foremost an energy security bill,\u201d Manchin said, adding that \u201cthe EV tax credits were designed to grow domestic manufacturing and reduce our reliance on foreign supply chains for the critical minerals needed to produce EV batteries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Manchin\u2019s bill comes as Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi are set to attend the Washington, D.C., Auto Show on Wednesday to highlight the Biden administration\u2019s efforts to boost EVs and related infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The White House declined to comment Wednesday on Manchin&#8217;s bill, but the measure by the West Virginia lawmaker is unlikely to gain traction in the narrowly divided Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority. During the midterm election campaign, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2022-midterm-elections-biden-technology-283e27fb609f7227cb3f499547e13fbd\" data-ylk=\"slk:Republicans criticized Biden and other Democrats\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Republicans criticized Biden and other Democrats<\/a> for supporting electric vehicles, citing their relative high costs and batteries that are currently made in China.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-us-department-of-the-treasury-business-north-america-audi-ag-0bcaf3e97b14e69418e6c204e7208dc1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tax credits\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Tax credits<\/a> of up to $7,500 per vehicle are intended to spur EV sales and domestic production of vehicles and batteries while reducing planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. European and Asian allies, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have criticized the rules as unfair to foreign manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>While Macron <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lauded Biden&#8217;s efforts to curb climate change, he said during a visit to Washington that subsidies in the new law could be an enormous setback for European companies.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-technology-macron-state-dinners-climate-and-environment-18ac145ec44a24200e0c105584fd20ef\" data-ylk=\"slk:acknowledged \u201cglitches\u201d in the legislation\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">acknowledged \u201cglitches\u201d in the legislation<\/a> but said \u201cthere\u2019s tweaks we can make\u201d to satisfy allies.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin&#8217;s bill follows a decision by the Treasury Department to delay rules on battery contents and minerals until March, while allowing the rest of the program to be implemented on Jan. 1. The Manchin bill directs the Treasury to stop issuing tax credits for vehicles that don\u2019t comply with battery requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is the birthplace of Henry Ford, who revolutionized the automotive industry,&#8221; Manchin said, calling it &#8220;shameful that we rely so heavily on foreign suppliers, particularly China, for the batteries that power our electric vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>EV sales have <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>led since Biden, a Democrat, took office two years ago, the Energy Department said, and there are now more than 2 million EVs and 100,000 chargers on U.S. roadways. The climate law, along with the 2021 infrastructure law and other changes, &#8220;are mobilizing public and private sector investments to reinvigorate domestic manufacturing, expand electric vehicle charging and lower transportation costs for American consumers,&#8221; the department said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin, chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, was a crucial vote in passing the climate law, which was adopted without support from any Republican.
